Chapter 3

Linda:

I've been working at Wentworth for about a month now. I've learned how the cell toss works when we have to do cell tosses. The prisoners punish the other prisoners at times for little things when they don't want to involve us guards. I even saw some of the inmates had handed cash to another guard when the inmates wanted them to leave the laundry for at least 15 minutes or wanted them to do a small favor. Not all the guards did that, only the desperate guards that wanted quick cash. I kept it to myself because I am not the type to rat on my co-workers.

It was a Tuesday evening when I was in Meg's office.

"How are you holding up?"

"I'm good. I've gotten to know how everything works real well."

"That's good."

She hands me an envelope.

"That's your first paycheck."

"Thank You."

"Friday I have something I need you to go to."

"What's that?"

"A Seminar. They hold it 4 times a year. It's for all the officers that are new within the 3 months when they hold it. All the officers from all the prisons go there."

"Okay. How long is it?"

"It's From Friday at 3 in the afternoon until Monday at 9 am."

"Okay."

That Friday I went to the seminar that Meg wanted me to go to. I learned a lot of things that weekend. There were at least 20 officers there from all different prisons.

Before I had started my shift Monday because I didn't have to be there until 3 so I grabbed a cup of tea from the cafe down the street from the prison. I sat in my car drinking my tea and did a couple of scratch offs to see if I could win a few bucks. After I finished my tea I headed into the prison and clocked in.

A few minutes later there was chaos and the prisoners were running wild. I came to the south entrance of the corridor and I saw Fletch and Vera standing there and Will was screaming for help because Meg was jabbed with a knife in her and this New prisoner was Standing there covered in blood. I was shocked. I came back from the seminar to find my best mate was killed by a prisoner.
