"Try this one; it will look beautiful on your skin," Ayesha Phuphu said as she showed me a bright red lehenga adorned with golden threads and white stones. But it didn’t excite me as it should have. I just stared at the dress blankly. There was no doubt that the dress was beautiful, but I didn’t want to wear red on my Nikkah. I looked at my Ammi, who pleaded with her eyes for me to try the dress, and I sighed before going to try it on.

Currently, Ammi, Ayesha Phuphu, Niya, and I are at a boutique, searching for dresses for my big day, which I wasn’t really looking forward to. It’s not that Ayesha Phuphu is bad or anything—she’s one of the best aunts you could ask for. She took care of Ammi and me when Bhai and Baba left us alone in the world. I’m always going to be grateful for everything she has done for me.

I heard someone calling for me from behind as I was about to close the door to the fitting room. I looked and saw that it was Niya, running toward me.

"Aaraam se, bacche, gir jaaoge aap," I said, and she slowed down a bit. She caught her breath as she reached me.

( " Slowly, baby...you will fall down " )

"Ammi… Aapko yeh joda pasand nahi aaya, haina?" she asked, placing both hands on her hips.

( " Ammi...you didn't liked this dress, right? " )

"Aapko kaise pata chala ki humein yeh joda pasand nahi aaya?" I asked. I must have had a surprised look on my face because she chuckled at me.

( " How did you know that I didn't liked this dress? " )

"Beti hoon aapki, sab samajhti hoon," she said, looking serious, and now it was my turn to chuckle at her cute face. I crouched down to her level and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, and she smiled brightly.

( " I'm your daughter, I know everything about you " )

"Aap Nani ke paas chale jaao, hum yeh try karke aate hain," I said, and she nodded before running back as if her pants were on fire. I chuckled a little and closed the door to try on the dress.

( " You go to Grandmother, I'll come back after trying this dress " )
