~~Final thoughts dead in her arms, I think I moved on too soon.~~
Chapter 17
Daniel and Madison plotted. Deciding to hand over the reanimated body of Reed's. It was risky as hell but we didn't have much of a choice. We were out manned, and out gunned. Madison insisted she had to be the one to go, considering it was her family that was in trouble. Nick wasn't too keen on letting her go but he finally caved in.
We watched on the hull as Madison sped toward the docks in the Zodiac. Reed was bound with a pillow case covering his bloodied face. Even with his face covered it was clear he was an infected.
"Common. We can watch from the cockpit." I suggested to Nick once Madison left our view.
"God why wouldn't she just let me go?" He huffed as we began walking.
"You heard her reasons. Because you want to." I responded. "You hated the fact that I wanted to hurt Reed. It's the same idea. You don't have to, you want to."
"It's not the same! They have my family." Nick's defensive manner threw me off. I furrowed my eyebrow, confused at the outburst.
I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He was stressed. Worried about the well-being of his family. I didn't respond. We entered the cockpit. Strand already had eyes on Madison. Luis sat, annoyed and impatient.
"This isn't good." Strand broke the silence, handing his binoculars to Nick.
"What? What's on?" I exclaimed. Praying his answer didn't include the word dead.
"Looks like Travis is beating the shit out of one of Connors' men. Alicia's not there." Nick stressed.
I let out a shaky breath. I hated sitting back and watching. Madison should've let one of us go with her. I ripped the binoculars out of Nick's hands, desperate to see the scene myself. I scanned the area.
Madison and Travis made their way back on the Zodiac. Reed had sunk his teeth into his brother's neck, and continued to feast on the other two men. That's some poetic justice if I've ever seen it.
"Wait." I took a double take. "I see Alicia." I handed Nick the binoculars so he could see for himself. She stood on top of one of the boats, looking to be talking to Jack. I held my breath, watching her backup, closer and closer to the edge.
"Common Alicia." Nick mumbled. I nervously held his hand. Trying to seek some sort of comfort.
We watched as Madison and Travis drove the Zodiac closer to Alicia. Waving their arms, assumingly signaling her to jump. With a few long strides she jumped. I couldn't watch; I buried my head into Nick's arm, silently praying she actually landed in the water.
"She made it. They made it." Nick let out a laugh full of relief.
"Oh thank god." I let out a deep breath. I uncovered my face, looking between the two men beside me.
The horrible tension of the moments before had died down. We stood on the hull, awaiting their return. Soon enough the Zodiac was in sight. I couldn't help but smile. We were all okay. We all survived this. Yes, maybe we walked away with more scar; both mentally and physically, but I'd surely take that over watching another death.
Once they returned, the hull was full of tearful reunions. Madison clung onto her children for dear-life. Afraid they'd disappear if she let go. Chris ran to his father, and to my surprise, he accepted his fathers embrace.
