~~Dear agony just let go of me~~
Chapter 23
We wandered around the Colonia, taking in our new surroundings. It was fairly large, a small town's worth of people inhabited it. Many families. The multitude of children playing made the place feel a lot safer. Families wouldn't inhabit this place if it were unsafe, right? Though I had thought the same thing about Celia's place, and that didn't end well.
The only thing that threw me off was the wall of infected. They wandered around aimlessly between two fences. The only way in or out was through a bus, then through the infected, meaning you had to camouflage to get through them. It was strange but quite smart. It deterred any unwanted guests, dead or alive.
"So what'd y'all do on the run?" I questioned. Nick and I walked through the Colonia. Most of the people only spoke Spanish leaving only a small handful of people we were able to communicate with.
"Went to a nearby trading post. Those assholes with guns run the place. Traded some oxy for some water." He briefly explained.
"What? Wait- oxy? Luciana took you?" I stuttered. I tried to maintain my composure. I wasn't necessarily mad at him for going, but I certainly wasn't pleased. 'The assholes with guns', as we call them, were unpredictable. Considering they shot at us for no reason I don't doubt that it could happen again.
"Hey." Nick spoke softly, taking my hand in his own. "I'm okay, got back just fine." He seemingly read my mind. Or rather my expression, I softened my expression once realizing I wasn't hiding my unease very well.
"Okay. Okay. I trust you. I want to come along next time. Make sure you don't get into any trouble." I jabbed his side playfully.
"Hold on." Nick let go of my hand. A young girl sat on the ground, playing with a doll by herself. Wide-eyed with a hint of sadness. Nick approached the young girl, carefully kneeling in front of her. I chuckled at his posture. I followed, leaving enough space between us to ensure we wouldn't overwhelm the girl.
"Hola. Here. I got you something. It's a little bit smushed but it should be alright." He held out a small package. My heart fluttered. He was such a sweet boy. Seeing the small acts of kindness he did for others reminded me why I had chosen him in the first place. The girl didn't react, likely to the language barrier.
"Take it. It's yours." She only stared back. "Okay, well it's here if you want it." He placed the package in front of her. He sat down, figuring she would like the company. She didn't look bothered by his presence. She picked up the package and ate the cake graciously.
"Los siento." He spoke. He's sorry? I made a mental note to ask him about it later.
I watched the scene in awe. As did Luciana; but not in awe but confusion. I jumped realizing she was next to me. "Uh hey." I spoke awkwardly, trying to play it off.
