~~ I got this feeling that I'm losing it~~
Chapter 29
I wandered around the ranch aimlessly. No Nick in sight, but considering the place wasn't full of gunfire I took that as a good sign. There was a large seating area, full of picnic tables. The few people who inhabited the space quickly took notice of my presence, including Troy.
"Hey. [Y/N]!" He waved me over. Great.
I clenched my jaw, walking over to his table. He closed his notebook, sliding it into his pocket as I sat down across from him.
"What." I said annoyed.
I wasn't too happy that I had to play nice. Playing nice meant not starting a war with these people, but that didn't stop me from showing Troy some attitude.
"Welcome to the ranch. I think with some time it'll grow on you, if it hasn't already." His tone was smug, like he was proud of himself for bringing us here regardless of our original objections.
"We'll be leaving eventually so don't hold your breath." I muttered. "So- what were your intentions back at the base? Or were you just killing people for fun."
"It was for science." I scoffed at his answer. "Seriously. Figuring out how long it took for people to turn. There's a multitude of variables that affect the timing. Like weight, height, gender." He seemed ecstatic that I had asked, proud to show off his findings.
"Doesn't sound very ethical. Taking innocent lives just so you can fill your book with useless information."
"It's not useless. We need to know these things. How long we can spend with a loved one once they're bitten." Troy began to get defensive. It was eerie how easy he could excuse his actions, not a single ounce of remorse. "What did you do before this?"
"I was a psych student."
"You were in a scientific field. You should be familiar with unethical studies. They still provided crucial and beneficial information did they not?" He retaliated.
"Yeah, but it sparked a huge debate in ethics. Then there were standards implemented. The main one being consent. You're not a scientist Troy. You're just a boy who wants to play god with other people's lives." I leaned forward, lowering my voice.
"You know we're more alike than you think." He chuckled. "I just have a feeling."
"How so?" I asked, bored. My gaze strayed from Troy to the people behind him. He noticed, following my line of sight.
"What?" He muttered confused.
Is that? Wait, wait, that's impossible. Within a moment my body went ice cold, the once lively surroundings were now muffled and still. My mind had to be playing a sick joke on me. A man sat at a table a few feet away from us, a man who looked identical to my father. The father I assumed to be dead in the bombed wreckage of L.A.
