Chapter 25

A knock erupted at our door. Nick sprung to the door before I had the chance to open my eyes. With an annoyed groan, I dragged myself out of the bed, joining Nick at the door.

"What's going on?" I questioned, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Luci stood at the door. She must've left after I had fallen asleep.

"Luci and I have to do the run today. Francisco is gone, he took his family and ran." Nick turned to me.

I didn't really know the man, nor his family but Luciana's expression was one of worry. It was a ruthless world out there, especially for a child. "Does Alejandro know?"

We waited in Alejandro's office, and he soon entered the room. I was going to help out in the pharmacy today anyways but the addition of Nick and Luciana seemed to surprise him. He stood on the opposite side of the table, waiting for us to speak.

"Francisco is gone." Luciana explained. Followed by Nick.

"And his family."

I simply watched the conversation play out as I didn't know the family. It felt wrong putting input on situations that didn't involve me.

"Did you know about this?" He snapped at Luciana. Her brows furrowed in confusion.

"No." She shook her head.

Nick and I exchanged a suspicious glance. The undertones of aggression from Alejandro was certainly unexpected.

"Two scouts in two weeks. No thank you, no goodbye. Steal into the night like cowards." He continued. I couldn't help but scoff at him, earning a death glare from the man, "Have something you want to say?"

I held my hands up in a defensive manner, "Nope." I responded, popping the P.

I could understand his frustration, but the people here weren't prisoners. I didn't find an issue with people coming and going as they pleased. Considering I'd be spending my day here, there would be plenty of time to vocalize the thought.

"Well he has a sick child." Nick reasoned.

"And the infirmary is full and water is scarce," Alejandro continued, "Times of strife are the true test."

"The people should hear your words." Luciana said.

Alejandro did just that. He called a meeting with the citizens of the Colonia. A lot of these people just needed something or rather someone to believe in. Alejandro was just that. The so-called "Immune man". The people's beckon of hope and faith. Personally I wasn't all for motivational speeches. A lot of his words felt superficial. No amount of hope can change the fact that the dead are walking. Death is inevitable, more than ever these days.
