── those two weeks felt both as slow as an eternity yet sickenly quick. you took notes about the southwest land from the vikings affiliated with the dragon hunters who had participated in some raids and searching for any possible dragon species. they had told you about the land they had called the black pool - otherwise known as dublin.

nancy mulligan would've been a girl from just outside of dublin, the daughter of a baker. a girl caught in the middle of a raid while out looking for herbs and berries per her father's instructions. to make a long story short, she'd attempt to swim away for her life and end up on a certain sea stack.

you looked over the edge of the boat, the sea was darker than the sky above it. you couldn't even estimate how deep it was, what was living in it, how cold it'd be... you had to admit, you were scared.

"what if there's a water dragon?" you asked, your tone soft and timid.

"too close to shore for any of that," viggo responded, his hand on your shoulder. "would i ever put my own dear sister in harms way?"

"i don't know, it's not like you're making me swim for what? ten minutes? in the freezing cold water, making me climb a fucking seastack and sit and wait for someone to notice me. not like i'll get hypothermia or anything," you looked at him from the side of your eye. "i suppose seventeen years was enough for me."

"that's a bit-"

"no, no, no i don't think it's dramatic at all," you looked down at the water, wondering just how deep it really was. "oh gods, that's gonna be cold..."

you listened as he took a deep breath.

"i want weekly letters, in the case that we need to meet, we'll arrange it via the terror mail," he explained, beginning to add a few additional tears to your dress with his dagger, hand gentle. "after you read and keep a mental note of my messages, get rid of them. whether that's setting it on fire, tossing it in the sea, or feeding it to a dragon, make sure your eyes are the only ones that see it."

"yeah, yeah i know, i'm not an idiot," you kept your arms crossed.

you could soon see the sun begin to rise, which meant you had to act fast. you had already said your goodbyes to ryker the night prior. you sighed again before feeling your brother's warm hands on your shoulders.

"remember, i wouldn't have you do anything you couldn't handle," he assured you. "even if they did find you out, which they won't, they wouldn't hurt a young girl like you. trust me."

"trust you," you took a breath. "right... yeah, i trust you."

you sat on the ship's end, swinging your legs over.

"i'll uh, see you when i see you then?" you asked as you looked at your older brother.

he simply nodded in response, patting your shoulder.

you took a deep breath, in and out, watching as your feet dangled about ten feet above the water. you knew you wouldn't be able to jump in.

"viggo."

"hm?" he hummed.

"push me."

"pardon?"

"just push me before i chicken out," you continued frantically.

"would you like a countdown or-"

"-just push me before i start hyperventilating please," you cut him off.

before you knew it, your entire body was fully submerged in colder-than-freezing water. from that very moment, you began to dread every moment of your life that led up to having to swim in the archipelago waters right before winter began.

you swam as quickly as you could, to both keep your heart rate up and to stay clear of any dragons that could've been living in those waters.

you kicked your feet, treading the water beneath your neck as you looked up at the sea stack you were instructed to climb.

'of course, of fucking course' you thought to yourself, looking at the height of the stack. You reluctantly got to climbing, the rough texture of the rock irritating the soft, wet skin of your hands nearly immediately. you felt as if you were on the brink of death.

as you reached the top, you took a sigh of relief as your back fell against the damp grass and moss, the sun had finally began to rise, providing you with a sliver of warmth while in your rather hypothermic state.

the last thing you heard before letting your heavy eyes win the battle of sleep was a thunder horn, with a man and a woman yelling something about a morning show.
