CABIN STAY

Matt and I were getting older now, our very last baby just graduated high school and was already doing her thing at college. Matt and I hadn't had much time to just be us in forever. All our kids knew that. They had joined together, giving Matt and I the perfect vacation. It was lonely though, but at least we had each other.

The small cabin sat at the edge of the lake. When we arrived, the sun was just about to set casting a golden glow across the water. A few other cabins danced along the edge of the lake, but we had the best view of it. Trees partially blocked the sunlight casting shadows across the water. Matt and I lugged our bags into the house taking a quick sweep of the inside before heading out for a short walk.

It was so beautiful, our relationship. How we've been together since we were kids, and now our kids were growing up, off to find the love of their lives. Our oldest, Aubrey, was already getting married next months to a wonderful man named Adam. She was 23 now. "Do you remember the day Aubrey was born?" i asked matt, suddenly feeling nostalgia was over me. Matt chuckled from beside me, grabbing my hand and pulling me closer. "I do."

Early autumn air filtered around Matt and I as we went on our walk. Our first baby girl Aubrey wasn't due for another week or so, and I was having a really hard time doing anything physical. I had never grown up to be a lazy person, and I wanted to walk. Matt and I went up to Vermont, just us two so we can get some alone time together before the baby arrived, before the hustle and bustle of first time parents got too overwhelming for us. We had walked around a bit, and my stomach kept tightening up. It felt a little like she was shifting, so I thought nothing of it. We stood, taking a break, looking out over the cliff at grassy fields and a shining blue lake. Families clung to the lake, barbeques going, kids swimming. Suddenly Matt steps back, eyeing me carefully. "Are you sure you're alright?" his hand rests at my lower back, almost keeping me upright. This was the fifth time I've asked to stop in ten minutes. I nodded, waving him off. "Look at that little girl over there." I pointed at the water, Matt taking his questioning eyes off me for a moment. "What about her?" Matt searched around the sandy rock shore before he finally fell upon a little girl playing in the sand. She was maybe four or five years old. She was wearing jelly sandals, a cute one piece bathing suit with a frilly tulle skirt and princess Aurora on the front (from what I could tell). "She's cute, don't you think." I admired the kid for a moment. "Our kids gonna be playing in the sand like that soon enough." Matt chuckles. "Are you seriously thinking about our girl growing up now? She hasn't even been born yet?" Matt laughs looking between the girl and I. Suddenly, a man scoops the girl up into her arms. Matt and I watch carefully, just in case. But she giggled and laughed, squirming around in his arms. Another person, a woman, walks up behind the two. She wraps an arm around the man, ruffling the daughter's curly hair. "That's gonna be us soon." I swallowed, feeling the sudden overwhelming feeling of crying.

"Oh... Maybe sooner than we taught, uh Matt." I backed away from the fence. A small puddle of water right where I was standing. "Your water broke." Matt says nonchalantly. "Your water broke?" Matt walked over to me taking my hand and carefully guiding me in the direction we first came from. "Holy shit! Your water broke!" Matt presses a couple kisses to my lips and cheek. "Matt, please!" I huffed as we walked into the forest, the direction we came from. "Oh, God. Your water broke!"

Matt went through all the phases before we could finally get into the car. It felt like the most Matt Sturniolo thing to ever happen, being in the woods when I go into labor.

I laughed as we came upon a large tree stump. Matt and I sat down, I fixed my shoes and zipped my jacket up further to keep the cold out. "What about when the twins were born?" I giggled looking at Matt again.
