I held the locket up, examining it closely. Rachel and her mom leaned in, their faces illuminated by the faint moonlight filtering through the shattered window.
"Look again at the locket," the note had said. But what were we looking for?
I turned the locket over, studying the intricate engravings. Suddenly, Rachel's mom pointed to a small, almost imperceptible seam.
"Try opening it," she suggested.
I carefully pried the locket open, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside, a tiny piece of paper was folded into a neat square. I unfolded it, and a message scrawled in faint ink read:
"Meet me at the old oak at midnight. Come alone."
The message was dated twenty years ago, the same year my mother left.
Rachel's eyes met mine, a spark of excitement igniting within them. "Do you think it's a clue to what happened to your mom?" she whispered.
I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities. Who wrote the message? And what did they want with my mother?
As the storm raged on outside, we huddled together, the locket's secrets fueling our determination to uncover the truth. Little did we know, the night held more surprises, and the old oak tree stood waiting, its branches whispering secrets in the wind.
