"I recognise some of the children from Grandpas stories...but...who is that?"
————————————-

After finding out the beautiful children's home their Grandpa had described and lived in for years was now a pile of dirty rubble and old brick walls with a bit of the roof still standing, Jake and (y/n) decided it was best to head back to the pub, since they were up to their knees in mud and dirt from walking through the marshy muddy grass. They felt rather miserable and disappointed. Jake was heartbroken but didn't want to show it too much to his sister. He truly believed that the house wouldn't have been in the state they had found it in. (Y/n) felt bad for her brother more than anything. Though deep down she truly wished they would have been able to see the house in all its glory, just the way their Grandfather described it in his stories.

After what felt like hours, Jake and (y/n) dragged their exhausted feet into the pub, the door creaked open as they stood looking around to spot their Father who was nowhere to be found though the pub was more lively than when they first arrived. A few locals were chatting and sitting around enjoying some fish and chips or a pint of beer. Jake threw his completely mud soaked shoe into a rubbish bin by the front door with a small sigh as (y/n) took off  her dark blue jacket, folding it and holding it to her chest.

"No use crying over a muddy shoe" a voice chuckled from a nearby table. The Portman twins turned their heads to be met with the elderly man in the wheelchair they had encountered with their father and Kev when they first arrived to the pub. "Come sit you too. I haven't properly introduced myself" he pointed to the two chairs across the table from him.

"I've met your Father earlier he's a funny man. He was asking all about the birds on the island. I've lived here all my life and I couldn't tell you a common crow and a raven apart!" the grey haired man chuckled, putting his hand out for the two to shake. "My Names Oggie but everyone here calls me Uncle Oggie" he smiled kindly. "I'm Jake and this is my sister (y/n)" The dark haired boy shook the man's hand as (y/n) smiled at Uncle Oggy. The twins sat opposite him at the small table. "Would you two like something to drink or eat?" He asked. "No uh we're fine but we have some questions to ask...about the children's home, if you don't mind" (y/n) chimed. "Ask away" nodded Uncle Oggie. "What happened to it? Why is it in ruins?" Jake asked in one breath. "A German air raid. Bomb fell right in the roof...September the third 1943" the old man explained. "Where did they go after? Did they leave the island?"Asked (y/n) leaning forward in her chair.

"Not one survivor...poor kids...and they were lovely too" Uncle Oggie shook his head with a small frown.

Following the dreary conversation they had with Uncle Oggie, (y/n) and Jake walked upstairs to their room. (Y/n) opened the door to be met with a red carpeted room in a dim lighting and sad beige colour walls. Two single beds with floral bedsheets and one double bed was situated at the end of the room along with one small cracked window on the wall, though it was far too dark outside to see a single thing.

They were greeted by their Father who was wearing a pair of reading glasses perched over his nose as he typed on a laptop.
He sat at a small wooden desk near the door. Next to the desk was a tiny bathroom big enough for one person to enter at a time.

"What happened to you guys?" Franklin looked at his children's muddy trousers and shoes. "We went to visit the children's home" (y/n) explained, taking off her hoodie to reveal a somewhat clean t-shirt underneath. "What was it like?" He asked, trying to sound a little bit interested. "It's in ruins Dad" Jake mumbled. He took a clean pair of sweatpants from his black suitcase that was sitting on the floor and then walked into the small bathroom to get changed.

"After we came back we talked to the elderly man the wheelchair, Uncle Oggie. He told us about the German air raid and that a bomb got dropped on the house... there were no survivors" (y/n) crossed her arms, as a small frown appeared on her face. "Why didn't Grandpa tell us that they all died?" Jake asked, coming out of the bathroom in clean clothes, sitting on his bed. "He leaves to join the army then three months later everyone he knows dies...not even Grandpa could turn that into a bedtime story" Their Dad sighed, still typing on his laptop.
