"Are you jealous we're making conversation with her and you aren't?"
"Why would I be jealous?"
—————————————After slipping into her new but old fashioned dress, (Y/n) twirled in it and smiled. She stepped out of the small bathroom, placing her other clothes onto a wooden shelf near the sink before she skipped down the staircase.
It didn't take long to hear the echos of chatter and giggles coming from a room down the hallway. (Y/n) walked towards the noise, her shoes clicked against the cold tiled floor before she creaked open a wooden double door to be met with the children awaiting their supper. The comforting smell of roast chicken was the first smell to hit her nose.
A long table dressed in a delicate white cloth was placed in the middle of the room. Feathered lamps hung from the ceiling bearing a warm atmospheric light as well as a handful of large potted plants scattered around the room for a bit of colour. (Y/n) walked inside, her black shoes sank into the red carpet as she gazed upon the detailed patterned wallpaper painted with pictures of different exotic looking birds, she was certain her father could name every one of those birds without a doubt.
"(Y/n)! Come sit with us!" A familiar voice called from the table. The (h/c) haired girl broke her gaze from the wallpaper to be met with Fiona patting a wooden chair beside herself.
On the table the large carrot Fiona had grown was cut up and stacked like a wedding cake in the middle, it was surrounded by green glossy peas and broccoli, and of course not to mention the golden crispy roast chicken that lay upon the end of the table, pieces of it were already sliced and placed onto the white plates that were sitting on the table in front of each child.
"Emma's dress suits you very well" said Olive with a smile as the other younger children nodded in agreement. "I've never worn one as pretty as this" (Y/n) said, looking down at its beautiful fabric. "You look like a princess!" Cheered Bronwyn with a grin causing (Y/n) to giggle as she sat down at her seat. Enoch raised his eyes for a moment to acknowledge the girls presence, he then proceeded to stare back down at his fork and knife. He didn't care about her or why she was here...it didn't matter who she was, though him and her shared a small interaction earlier it meant nothing...and it was better to not think about it, he just wanted to get supper over with.
The seating arrangement looked very much planned out. Claire sat next to Hugh at the far end of the table across from Bronwyn and Millard. In the middle Olive sat across from Horace and at the top of the table the young twins sat across from Fiona. And lastly, Enoch sat at the top of the table. (Y/n) couldn't help but wonder if they sat in these seats every night for supper or even every meal at that.
(Y/n) sat down between Fiona and Enoch. Her plate was full of a delicious meal. One slice of chicken accompanied by a slice of the giant carrot and of course a few peas and stems of broccoli. "Do you guys cook meals like this every night?" (Y/n) gazed down at her plate for a few moments. Her parents would cook from time to time but they would rarely prepare roast dinners, and when they did it looked like nothing compared to the one that was sitting in-font of the (h/c) haired girl.
"Yes! I grow the vegetables, Bronwyn takes them to the kitchen, Olive mostly cooks but we all help out from time to time!" Explained Fiona, poking the piece of carrot on her plate. "Yeah and I taste test, that's my job!" Hugh joked, picking up a piece of chicken from his plate. "We must wait for Miss Peregrine" Olive shook her head, lowering his fork from his mouth. "Awh..."
The young children laughed at Hugh's words as (Y/n)'s eyes focused towards the sulking teen sitting at the top of the table.
Enoch sighed as he continued to stare at his plate with furrowed eyebrows. (Y/n) glanced at the boy for a second but before she knew it he locked eyes with her, a blunt expression was plastered across his face but his eyes brightened in the dim light of the room making them glow a tint of honey hazel.
(Y/n)'s cheeks flushed in embarrassment as she darted her eyes away from him in an instant.
