I blinked blankly at the brunette boy standing in the doorway, a slight smirk painted onto his annoyingly handsome face as his left arm stood up against the frame of the door and loomed like a cloud above me."Lorenzo." I seethed.
"Madison." He spoke, placing a cigarette between his lips and breathily inhaling and intentionally facing away in an attempt to avoid getting the smoke into my face.
"What are you doing here?" I furrowed my eyebrows, my eyes burned with clear frustration.
"Came to see you." He nodded.
I immediately rolled my eyes, grabbed the handle and went to slam the door shut. "I don't want to see you, goodnight Loren-."
I was briefly interrupted by Lorenzos hand closing around my wrist, I glanced up at his concerned face and gulped when our eyes locked into place like the last two missing pieces of a puzzle.
"Wait, pleas-" He pleaded, clearing his throat. "I need to tell you something."
I bit the inside of my cheek, "How's that Slytherin girl you were all over at the party?"
I must say, it came out a shit ton sassier and a lot earlier than I had originally anticipated; but I was pissed, and rightfully so.
Lorenzo's lips parted before sighing deeply, breaking eye contact and turning his head to the side.
"It wasn't like that." His gaze turned to the tiled floor.
"What? You fucked her and then never talked to her again, is that it?" I nodded, "Isn't that how you treat all women? Make them fall in love with you and then blow them off the second they want something serious?"
He gulped deeply, I could notice his suddenly prominent adams apple move as he hit the inside of his lip. "You know that's not true."
"Do I?" I folded my arms and tilted my head.
"Mads-" He paused, correcting himself, "Madison."
"What."
"I-" He began, before stopping himself, opening his mouth to speak again and looking away from my gaze when nothing came out.
"See? Your wasting my time. Now if you don't mind..." I paused, throwing a bag over my shoulder and fixing my hair, "I have a date to get to."
"A date that doesn't show up?" He breathed, his eyes meeting mine once again.
"What?" I stuttered, "How did you-?"
Lorenzo bit the inside of his cheek. "I saw him and Cho making out in the courtyards together."
"I'm sorry, who?" I laughed sarcastically, still bewildered by his sudden knowledge of my dating life.
"Cedric and Cho. In the courtyards, making out." He spoke, his gaze occasionally ricochet from the wall to my eyes.
"When was this?" I asked, feeling my mouth dry up as my eyes began to swell with tears.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, removing his hand and placing them in his pockets.
"Tonight."
I immediately diverted my eyes to the floor. His words etched wounds into my mind as the sudden realisation that I was completely unwanted ached it's way into my brain. Every man I've ever liked has left me for someone prettier, someone funnier, someone better.
"How did you know we were meant to be going out tonight?" I whispered as a sudden strike of thunder cast its way from outside the castle.
"I was watching you... with him, at the party."
"You were busy with that girl, you wouldn't of had time to listen in on me and Cedric's conversation." I furrowed my eyebrows again.
"No Madison." Lorenzo shook his head before taking a sudden breath, "What I was 'busy with' was a distraction."
"A distraction from what exactly?" I rolled my eyes once again.
"From us." He corrected himself, "From you."
I could of sworn I felt time stop in that exact moment.
"You don't mean that." I felt my voice break.
"Every word." He whispered, "Over the past 2 years; you have consumed every last one of my thoughts. Before we even started whatever you want to call our current situation; I would watch you and admire every smile line that crept on your face when you laughed at my corny jokes, the way you know every man in this school has the biggest crush on you but your too caught up in your own world to notice, and the way you always see the best in people even if they treated you or treat you like shit."
He exhaled lightly, locking my eyes with his once again.
"And that's what i'm asking you to do right now Madison." Lorenzo whispered, "See the best in me despite the pain I caused you, the same way you did with Mattheo."
My weary eyes flickered from his left eye to his right, then his lips to the floor.
"I've desperately dissected every ounce of my mind to try and find a path that directs me away far away from our bond, but every single one of those paths have led me back to you. Back to your eyes, back to your stupid smile." Lorenzo laughed lightly, now avoiding my gaze as his throat began to close up.
"It didn't matter how many other girls I kissed, spoke to, distracted myself with...because..." He gulped, his eyes burning a gaping hole through my heart. "I couldn't love any of them the way I do for you."
"Lorenzo I-" A tear fell tiredly down my cheek.
"It kills me to know I love you because I know I cannot be with you." He ran a hand through his hair and grazed his thumb over my cheek lightly.
"My brother..." my voice laced with a delicate whisper. "We can't-"
"The friendship I share with your brother is not comparable to the love I feel when I'm with you, Madison."
I folded my hand over the one that was imprinted onto my cheek.
"If we date, Lorenzo..." I gulped, "You may be able to cope without speaking to my brother again but I wouldn't live with myself if it meant he hated me."
"Anyone that hates you for choosing love first, isn't someone you should be killing yourself over."
I blinked up at him, thinning my lips into a fine line, removing his hand from my cheek and intertwining our fingers.
"If we do this, for real this time..." I breathed, "We can't tell anyone, not yet."
He nodded at me, his eyes fixated on my lips. "I understand."
"How do I know your not going to go breaking my heart?" I spoke, an almost venom in my voice at the pure idea.
"Because I promise you I won't." He whispered.
"Are you sure?"
"One hundred and one percent sure." He smiled carefully.
"Then it's settled." A faint laugh cast itself onto my lips, "It's a secret."
Not any secret, a secret that held so much weight it weighed heavily on my heart. A secret that if told could not only ruin my life, but the one standing directly before me, one this didn't need any words to spill but a singular, slight wrong move and I could wave goodbye to the bond with my brother and family.
Not just a secret...
Our secret.
