FROM THE MINUTE Seraphina Laurent had held her daughter in her arms, she had made a promise to her from that moment onwards: No matter how tough life became, regardless of the pain and suffering that would follow them, their love for one another would never splinter. Seraphina would never become a mother that her daughter loathed.

For eighteen years, Seraphina had lived her life following that promise. She had stood by every choice Ascella Black had made. Even when she had followed Harry Potter and Ron Weasley into the Forbidden Forest, despite them being strongly advised not to. When she had gone after her supposed mass-murdering uncle, determined to get to the bottom of why he had done what he did and how someone who had fought so hard to be good, could turn into a stranger of himself and replica of his father. From chasing visions at the Ministry of Magic and finding Horcruxes in a cave, Seraphina would always stand by her daughter. Nothing could change that.

Seraphina had made mistakes in her life. Some would say that involving herself with Regulus Black was one of them, but Seraphina liked to think otherwise. If she hadn't, she would never have her daughter, and Seraphina was unable to envision her life without Ascella. If it wasn't for her, Seraphina would have likely become another victim of the first wizarding war, a faceless, nameless corpse amongst the battle of light and dark.

Some would also point out her friendship with the other Black brother was a mistake she had made. Seraphina had always felt guilt towards Sirius — she had concealed her daughter with his brother from him for years, and before she'd ever got the chance to tell him that there was a part of Regulus still alive, he had been locked away in Azkaban with the key tossed away and never to be found again. Seraphina could remember that day like it was yesterday. She doubted she could ever forget it.
