FRESNO.
DANIEL AND JENNIFER WERE asleep for hours the morning after prom, his arms around her as she kept her head in the crook of his neck. She wore his big t shirt, with some of her own boy shorts.
Seeing as Jennifer was leaving soon - he wanted every second, and every minute to be with her. His heart grew smaller as the days went on - leaving him with less time but still, he cherished it.
He never said anything about being sad that Jenny was leaving, because he knew Berkeley was her dream, and he'd do nothing to diminish that - but inside, he was definitely devastated.
"Hey." He sent soft whispers to Jennifer, and when she kept stirring, his arms clung onto hers, placing a soft kiss on her forehead before he gently moved out of bed - quickly throwing on some jeans.
His favorite thing to do when Jennifer stayed over was get her food, and he put a shirt on quickly over his bare chest, opening the door to his room and shutting it right behind him as he exited.
It was nearly 1 PM, and he winced at the sight of the time - fixing his messy hair. As his hand reached for the front door of the empty apartment, he heard his bedroom door open, and Jennifer walked out, her eyes squinted as she yawned. "You're leaving?" Her voice was groggy and Daniel's hand left the doorknob to meet her in the middle of the hallway.
He smiled at the sight, some of her prom makeup still there even after washing her face, and her hair pretty messy. As he met her, his hand fixed it, tucking a few strands behind her ear before placing a soft kiss against her cheek. "Just to get food." His voice was soft with her - as soft as always and she squinted her eyes playfully before shaking her head.
She always did this, after brushing her teeth and fully waking herself up - Jenny made Daniel stay home with her to save money. She was in his pair of Spider-Man pajama pants now - stirring up the pancake mix as Daniel actually made them - standing there, unamused and all.
"We could've had this all already." He sighed, and Jennifer chuckled, handing him the bowl before turning to their plates.
It was a sweet, short lived but domestic moment when they were cooking. And after, Jennifer took her seat right next to Daniel at the counter to eat their breakfast.
They recalled last night and their antics that made them flush just thinking about it, every time their mind would wander off - Daniel connected them both in a kiss, his lips soft and his hair even softer as Jenny ran her hand through it.
Something about prom last night excited them - yes, they almost missed out but it was extremely rewarding - for both of them. Daniel, as he liked to say, won Jenny fair and square, and he was extremely pleased to show that.
Same with Jennifer, something about him choosing her out of all girls filled her with pride, and attending prom with him intensified that. But even more so, leaving prom. It was a blissful night that she didn't intend on ever forgetting.
Their kiss grew and Daniel pulled her stool closer to his, smiling against her lips as his hand hand her waist. He wanted to go on, though at the sound of the front door unlocking, they quickly pulled away, short laughs escaping their mouths.
Lucille walked in, her smile wide as she set down her keys. "You're up!" She chuckled, taking the bag of groceries to the other side of the counter.
"Hi, Lucille." Jenny grinned, poking at her eggs as she glanced to Daniel - a small smile on his face as he slowly looked from her to his mother.
"Hey, ma."
"So, Prom?" She perked up, taking some of the coffee that was brewed for herself. "How about it?"
Jennifer looked up from her plate - a small shrug before she answered, "Nice, actually."
Daniel nodded in agreement, his smile widening as he looked over to his mom and at that - Lucille cheered.
"Ah, that's great! Didn't you just love his suit - "
"Alright, ma." Daniel shook his head, sending a short glance to Jennifer who chuckled, sipping from her mug. "What about you, how was your night?"
His simple question caused Lucille to cringe just a bit, leaning on the counter and awkwardly shrugging as her smile faded.
"What?" Daniel asked, his voice overlapping with Jenny's.
"Bad day at work?"
"..Great day actually." It was silent for a minute, but suddenly Lucille smiled again.
"Well that's great, right?" Daniel asked, and Lucille nodded as she watched him turn to Jennifer who was back to wearing a smile.
Her eyes squinted at the two for a bit as they shared a look, mouths full of food, "You know, we're gonna be able to go on a vacation this summer." She spoke quickly, gaining their attention once again.
Lucille knew his plans were to stay with Jennifer all summer - but she couldn't leave him all alone after all he went through throughout the school year. As she watched Daniel's eyes narrow, she went on to explain. "I got picked by a company to go to Fresno for a bit, we leave in 2 days."
Immediately, Daniel turned to Jennifer again - a small laugh escaping his lips as he turned back to his mother. "Well, alright." He shrugged, "How long?"
"Just 2 months!"
