As they stood there, united in their determination, Arthur couldn't help but notice the way Merlin's eyes sparkled in the fading light. He felt a flutter in his chest, a feeling he'd grown accustomed to whenever Merlin was near.

Merlin, sensing Arthur's gaze, turned to him, a soft smile on his lips. "Arthur?" he asked, his voice low.

Arthur's face grew warm as he realized he'd been staring. "Just... thinking," he muttered, trying to cover.

Merlin's smile grew wider, and he reached out, his hand brushing against Arthur's. The touch sent shivers down Arthur's spine, and he felt his heart skip a beat.

Gaius, oblivious to the tension between them, continued, "We need to gather the knights and prepare for battle. We don't know what we're up against, but we'll face it together."

As they dispersed to begin preparations, Arthur found himself walking alongside Merlin, their shoulders almost touching. He couldn't help but steal glances at Merlin's profile, his heart swelling with affection.

Merlin, sensing his gaze, turned to him, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Arthur, focus," he whispered, his voice teasing.

Arthur chuckled, feeling a little self-conscious. "Sorry," he muttered, trying to concentrate on the task at hand.

But as they worked together, preparing for the impending battle, Arthur couldn't shake off the feeling that he was exactly where he was meant to be – by Merlin's side.

As night fell, they gathered in the great hall, the fire crackling as they pored over maps and strategies. Arthur found himself sitting closer to Merlin than necessary, their thighs touching as they sat on the bench.

Merlin didn't seem to mind, his hand brushing against Arthur's as they studied the maps. The touch sent shivers down Arthur's spine, and he felt his pulse quicken.

As the night wore on, the tension between them grew thicker, until Arthur couldn't resist anymore. He reached out, his hand covering Merlin's, his fingers intertwining with his.

Merlin's eyes locked onto his, a soft smile on his lips. "Arthur," he whispered, his voice barely audible.

The world around them melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in the depths of each other's eyes.

Gaius, clearing his throat, broke the spell, and they quickly parted, trying to compose themselves.

But Arthur knew that the moment had changed something between them. He felt a newfound sense of intimacy, a sense of connection that went beyond mere friendship.

As they continued to prepare for battle, Arthur couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them – not just as king and warlock, but as two people, bound together by their hearts.
