ynxox solo date :)...
there comes a time in every couple's relationship when a dissonance occurs. y/n had been in her fair share of relationships so she was expecting it.
kageyama, on the other hand, was worried that his first relationship would go up in flames after just two weeks.
he had been unintentionally standing y/n up on their dates because of volleyball practice. he'd make plans with her then suddenly she'd receive a text from him with an apology and a promise for it not to happen again.
but it did. again and again.
y/n knew it wasn't kageyama's fault, of course. she knew that the life of a student-athlete was a busy one. between balancing classes, practice, and games, there wasn't a lot of time for dating.
and because kageyama was still pretty awkward with his feelings and the relationship, he didn't know how to confront the problem. he didn't wanna ask sugawara any more questions.
he wanted to be independent about the situation. just like he did with his confession, he took his time to think things through.
hinata caught him staring at a wall and muttering his thoughts to himself. "your brain might hurt if you think that hard, bakageyama!" he'd tease, but deep down he was proud of his friend for being mature about it.
soon after, kageyama made up his mind. he made time to meet up with his girlfriend who he hadn't seen in almost a fortnight.
he sat at their usual table and felt his leg start to shake. everytime they called, he'd try to gauge how the girl was feeling but he always failed.
he was nervous to be face to face with her after a long time. he missed her and the effortless way she made him smile and filled him up with childlike wonder.
he wanted to be her boyfriend more than anything. he wouldn't let a few canceled dates be the end of them. but y/n had different thoughts about their situation.
she had dated guys before, yes. but she had never dated an athlete. she now understood why her friends rarely ever had girlfriends or went on dates.
when they weren't studying, they were practicing, and doing anything other than rest aside from that would've been unhealthy. so when she received kageyama's text, she decided. she would let him go.
that isn't to say that she doesn't like him too much. that would be severely incorrect. she liked him so, so much. so much so that she's willing to give him up so that he can achieve his dream.
after all, his first love wasn't her, it was volleyball.
she could feel tears threatening to spill from her eyes. it was a new sensation. her past boyfriends never made her cry. whether it was a breakup or a mistake they made, she never cried.
yet here she is, close to bawling her eyes out on the street because of a two-week relationship. it's different this time because it's kageyama.
kageyama, who, despite being blunt and awkward at times, was the sweetest guy ever. kageyama, who always made sure his health and y/n's was taken care of. kageyama, who y/n was pretty sure she was in love with.
but that was exactly why she needed to break up with him. she needed to let him go before her love for him took over her, before it would be too much to handle, too painful.
so she walked into that cafe with determination in her eyes. she nearly crumbled when she set her eyes on him for the first time in so long, but she reminded herself of her plan.
she took her seat which also startled kageyama out of his pondering. "y/n, hi," he started but soon y/n took over the conversation.
"tobio, i'm sorry." the words tasted bitter on her tongue, she wanted so badly to take them back, to act normal and hug him tight like she really wanted to, but no, she needed to do it.
"i think... no, i know. we need to break up." kageyama was stuck in a daze. what was happening? he thought they were going strong, he thought they were doing well.
he couldn't speak, he wanted to beg her to explain but he didn't need to, y/n quickly followed up the blow she landed on him.
"i like you so much and that's why i need to let you go. i don't wanna inhibit you from reaching your dream, tobio. i don't wanna be the one to blame when you don't. you probably think my reason is pretty stupid but a few years from now, when you're a hotshot volleyball player, which i know you will be! you're gonna remember me and you'll be grateful i let you go when i did."
"i've had too many people offer to give up their dreams for me but tobio, i don't want you to be one of them. so i'm sorry, okay? despite our short relationship, i can proudly say that you were my best boyfriend. i like– no, you know what? i love you. i love you, tobio, so i'm letting you go."
kageyama racked his brain for something to say but what was one supposed to say when put in his shoes.
y/n didn't wait for his reply, she couldn't bear it. she left as soon as she came and the tears started flowing. they flowed and they flowed and they didn't stop.
her roommate, aeri, called her in a panic when she still wasn't home by dinner time. y/n sent her location and aeri found her on a bench in the park y/n and kageyama frequented.
her face was moonkissed and her eyes were red and swollen. it was obvious she had been crying. her eyes were probably going to be like that for at least a week.
aeri took y/n back to their dorm, and made her bedroom extra comfy. she knew y/n preferred solitude when she was upset so she respected her wishes.
she left her with dinner in bed, a box of tissues, and an order to call her if y/n needed anything at all. but the one thing y/n needed was kageyama.
