a week had passed since y/n and kageyama's break up and despite being the one to initiate it, y/n was absolutely wrecked. she wasn't attending classes, she wasn't doing her work, she wasn't even eating properly. if it were possible, she wouldn't have been breathing either.
just like how kageyama was her best boyfriend, he was also her worst breakup.
aeri was starting to get concerned at her out-of-character behavior. no one could get her out of her room, not aeri, not the twins, not even suna.
it continued on for another week until aeri decided she had enough of her best friend moping around and neglecting her health. she barged into the girl's room, pushed her dog into y/n's arms, and dragged them both outside for a walk.
y/n didn't question it, she knew aeri was getting restless and she wondered how long it would take for her to finally break and drag her out.
she was cooped up in her room for so long that she forgot how nice it was to walk around campus. one of the reasons why she avoided the outside was because she didn't want to bump into a certain someone.
she didn't want to see how he was doing. whether he was doing worse or better than she was. she didn't want to know at all. she's even stopped herself from asking atsumu about him multiple times.
it seemed like since the breakup, nothing went well for y/n because just as she thought about not bumping into kageyama, he materialized right in front of her.
her worst nightmare came true. just from one glance she could tell that he wasn't coping with the split well. his eyes were red, he looked pale, and it looked like he had lost weight. exactly like y/n.
usually, when she bumped into her exes they'd share a fairly civil greeting and go on with their day, but kageyama was so different from them and the breakup was still fresh in both their hearts and minds.
they just stood there, taking each other's appearances in before they'd have to return to the reality where they aren't together anymore.
y/n knew that if she gazed at kageyama for a second more then her resolve would break, so she looked away first. she gave him a curt nod and caught up to aeri.
because she couldn't be selfish. she couldn't go back to him just because she was miserable then; she could get over him. but he couldn't risk his career for her. she wouldn't let him.
y/n looked back at kageyama to catch him already looking back at her. as soon as their eyes made contact, he turned away and so did y/n. which meant she didn't see when kageyama looked back at her again. that time longer, and more yearningly.
aeri and y/n returned to their dorm after a refreshing walk. from outside the front door, they could hear music playing and male voices loudly bantering over it. y/n smiled brightly as she realized who the intruders were, her bestfriends.
she opened the door and headed straight for the boys who made her senior high school days bearable, and they opened their arms out for her.
"i missed you guys!" y/n cried, she felt something was missing when she realized that suna wasn't there. "wait, where's rin?" she frowned.
osamu chuckled at her question as he finished plating up their dinner, "he had some assignments to finish but he's comin over, don't worry."
atsumu wasn't as amused as his brother, "y/nie, i thought you were my best friend! why're ya lookin for sunarin, huh?" he whined and y/n fondly rolled her eyes.
"because we aren't complete without him, dumbass."
the quartet sat in the living room watching a movie as they waited for suna to arrive. it had become an unofficial tradition of theirs to have dinner and a movie marathon at each other's dorms.
suna barged through the door in the middle of the movie they were watching, "hey, you guys started without me?" he teased with his usual stoic expression.
"don't worry, rinnie! we haven't eaten yet." atsumu sweetly answered making suna's face contort in mock disgust which earned him a throw pillow to the face from the blond.
"yuck, don't call me rinnie."
as they argued osamu stood up and started heating food up, "rin, c'mere and help put out the food and utensils. i'm fuckin starvin cuz you took so long."
while osamu ordered suna around, he was making himself comfortable on the couch with aeri's dog, blondie. y/n noticed that he was even starting to drift to sleep so she kicked atsumu in the leg and forced him to help his brother instead.
atsumu whined but y/n was persistent in her kicking so naturally, she won. she smirked as she glanced at suna in the corner of her eye full on snoring while cuddling blondie who looked slightly uncomfortable in his hold.
their night went on without a hitch, aside from the uni game that almost led to bloodshed between y/n and atsumu. and they all fell asleep in the living room.
y/n woke up in the middle of the night to drink water and stopped when she returned to lay down. she admired her support system as they rested from a night of subconciously comforting her.
she snatched her phone away from under atsumu's pillow and snapped a picture which she set as her new lockscreen, replacing the one of her and kageyama.
seeing the picture made her sad all over again and she wondered what he was doing at that time of night. whether he was sleeping well or if he was thinking about her too.
it was the latter.
kageyama sat on the chair he and hinata had on their balcony and started up at the moon. he had been having trouble sleeping since the breakup and the lack of rest was getting in the way of his practice.
he hadn't played volleyball in a while since his coach ordered him to take a break so he was feeling miserable. two of the things he loved the most were taken from him and he doesn't think he had fely sadness like that since his grandfather passed away.
he lifted his left wrist to check the time on the wristwatch he had bought on his first date with y/n. he couldn't even see the time because as soon as he looked at it, his eyes were blurring with tears.
after another crying session, he called it a night and returned to his bedroom but he barely got any sleep. he tossed and turned and reminisced and cried some more.
when he deemed it impossible to fall asleep, he went on a run and when he returned, hinata had just risen from his slumber. with just a glance, his roommate knew that he hadn't slept.
hinata pushed kageyama in a warm bath and gave him tea with orders to stay home and try to rest. then he reassured kageyama that he'd take notes and share them with him.
so there kageyama was, lying in bed with a broken heart and longing for the one person he couldn't have.
