"hey atsumu-san," tobio called out to the blond setter from across the gym, "what's up, tobio-kun?" he hollered back. "who's the girl in osamu-san's post? i know kenma from high school, but i'm not familiar with her."
"oh! that's l/n y/n, i coulda sworn ya guys met though. anyway, she transferred to inarizaki in our third year, and was our manager." atsumu explained while kageyama hummed, processing the new information.
"why d'you ask? ya think she's pretty, tobio-kun?" atsumu teased the dark-haired setter, "well, the photo was blurry so i couldn't really tell." the younger setter bluntly replied which made his senior sweat drop.
atsumu continued on, "ya know, i'm surprised you don't know her. she comes to our games a lot." kageyama raised his brows at his statement, "i never noticed."
"yeah, well, in high school she had a bunch of admirers and they bothered her alllll the time, so she decided she'd keep a low profile in uni." atsumu went on again and kageyama nodded along to show he was listening.
"okay, guys, you are dismissed for today. don't forget to check the team groupchat at least every two days; there are important stuff there." their coach announced. "yes, coach!" they all yelled in unison, making the older man wince and shoo them away with his hand.
the whole team made their way to the locker rooms to freshen up and depart from the gym. kageyama was one of the first to finish, along with atsumu. "tobio-kun, ya wanna go eat out with samu? y/n's comin' too, i can introduce ya." the latter playfully said, wiggling his eyebrows for a deeper effect.
kageyama considered his offer, some free food did sound pretty appealing at that moment. "sure, atsumu-san." he replied. "great, let's go! they're waitin' for us outside."
the two setters walked side by side towards the exit of the gymnasium, the door opened to reveal osamu, hinata, and the prettiest girl kageyama had ever laid his eyes on. he then realized that atsumu offered him an introduction to the girl along with the free food. selective hearing is real.
kageyama had always been pretty quiet, he didn't speak unless it was to yell, especially at hinata. it's not like he never had anything to say, he just kept whatever it was to himself. but at that moment, kageyama tobio found himself utterly speechless. his heart started beating weirdly. it felt like someone had thrown a punch to his solar plexus.
his older sister always talked and consumed media about romance, and one of the tropes she was especially fond of was 'falling in love at first sight.' he never really understood it, though, he figured it was a 'girl thing.' but when time slowed and froze at the moment y/n sent him a smile, kageyama wondered if this was what she was talking about.
"hey, you must be... 'tobio-kun' aka kageyama, right? tsumu talks about you a lot." she beamed, "oh, i'm l/n y/n, by the way." she sheepishly adds.
kageyama couldn't speak, his throat was dry. what the hell was happening to him? he cleared his throat and mustered out a response to her, desperately hoping she didn't think he was rude. "uh, yeah, i'm kageyama. nice to meet you, l/n-san."
their moment was broken by atsumu calling out to them, he and osamu were already walking further away. "c'mon, lovebirds, catch up! y'all can talk more at the cafeteria."
kageyama felt his cheeks flush at the cheeky comment while y/n only playfully rolled her eyes at the blond twin's antics. "shall we?" she said while gesturing to the path in front of them. kageyama nodded in agreement, offering her a small smile which she returned.
