Rin's POV
It’s late, and the air is thick with anticipation. The room is dimly lit, just enough to see the outlines of the summoning circle I meticulously drew earlier. The energy in the air crackles with tension, the kind that makes your heart race despite your best efforts to stay calm. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, ever since I found out I’d be the next candidate for the Holy Grail War. Now, it’s finally time.
But there’s a slight problem. I don’t exactly have a catalyst. No legendary artifact or ancient relic to ensure I summon the strongest Heroic Spirit. All I’ve got is…a random necklace. It’s not much, but I’ve poured my mana into it, hoping it’ll do the trick.
“Alright, here goes nothing,” I mutter to myself, clutching the necklace in my hand as I stand before the circle.
Artemis is here too, sitting off to the side like she owns the place, her legs splayed out like a boy’s. She’s got a matchstick in one hand, flicking it back and forth as she plays with a tiny flame. Not just any flame, of course—one that’s a mix of normal fire and her magical flame. Honestly, she looks more like a bored delinquent than a familiar, but I’ve learned not to expect much in the way of ladylike manners from her.
She’s so absorbed in her little experiment that she doesn’t even seem to notice what I’m about to do. It’s a bit frustrating, but whatever. I’ve got bigger things to focus on.
Taking a deep breath, I hold the necklace out and begin the chant, my voice steady but laced with determination:
"Fill. Fill. Fill. Fill. Fill. Let each be turned over five times, simply breaking asunder the fulfilled time. Let silver and steel be the essence. Let stone and the archduke of contracts be the foundation. Let my great Master Schweinorg be the ancestor. Let rise a wall against the wind that shall fall. Let the four cardinal gates close. Let the three-forked road from the crown reaching unto the Kingdom rotate.”
As I recite the words, I can feel the mana building, swirling around me like a storm. My heart pounds in my chest, excitement mingling with fear. This is it. I’m going to summon Saber, the strongest class. I can feel it.
“*I shall declare here and now. Your flesh shall serve under me, and my fate shall be with your sword. Submit to the beckoning of the Holy Grail. If you will accede to this will and reason, then answer my call. I make my oath here. I am that person who is to become the virtue of all Heaven. I am that person who is covered with the evil of all Hades. You, seven heavens clad in three words of power, arrive from the ring of deterrence, O keeper of the balance—!”
The circle glows bright, a flash of light blinding me for a moment. The air is thick with power, the energy so intense it’s almost suffocating. I squint, trying to see through the light as it begins to fade, revealing the figure standing in the center of the circle.
My breath catches in my throat. It’s a man—tall, with a lean, muscular build. His hair is white, stark against his tanned skin, and his clothes… Well, they look more like something a biker would wear. A black, sleeveless coat, tight pants, boots that seem made for riding. There’s an air of confidence about him, like he’s been through hell and back and came out on top.
Wait a minute… What the hell? This doesn’t look like Saber at all. Did I…did I summon the wrong class?
“Are you… Rider?” I ask hesitantly, my mind scrambling to make sense of this. I mean, the outfit sort of fits, right?
He raises an eyebrow at me, clearly unimpressed. “Rider? Seriously? Take another guess, Master.”
I blink at him, totally confused. “But the outfit… Never mind. What class are you?”
Before he can answer, Artemis finally looks up from her little experiment, her gaze flicking over to the newly summoned Servant. “Hm, this guy, huh?” she muses aloud, clearly unimpressed. “What’s he got to do with a random necklace? Doesn’t seem like much of a connection.”
Meanwhile, she’s still messing around with the flames, completely unconcerned with the fact that I just summoned what’s supposed to be my ultimate weapon for the Holy Grail War. Typical.
I grit my teeth, trying to ignore Artemis as she keeps playing with fire—literally. But when I glance back at my new Servant, he’s watching her too, though he doesn’t seem particularly interested. Instead, his gaze shifts back to me, a smirk tugging at his lips.
“Archer,” he finally says, the word dripping with confidence. “The name’s Archer.”
I freeze, my mind blank for a moment. Archer? No way. This guy…? But Saber was supposed to be the strongest class! How did I end up with Archer?
Before I can fully process this, Artemis suddenly stands up, stretching her arms over her head. “Huh, I don’t get it,” she says, as if she’s just realized something. “Doesn’t seem like this guy and the necklace have much of a connection.”
I stare at her, half-exasperated, half-curious. “Artemis, what are you doing?”
She glances at me, as if noticing my presence for the first time, and shrugs. “Just playing around. Mixing flames, you know? Trying to get them to balance each other out. Figured I’d make something fun while I’m at it.”
With a flick of her wrist, she brings the two flames together, the normal fire and her magical flame swirling around each other, merging into one. But instead of just creating a new flame, the fire shifts, taking on a strange, almost sentient form—a tiny, glowing figure with wings, like a fiery little fairy. And it’s…wearing a cape? What the hell?
“Check it out,” Artemis says, clearly pleased with herself. “Made a little fire fairy. Thought I’d give it an ego, too. Something along the lines of…oh, I dunno, a brooding vigilante? Like that guy in the comics. What’s his name again? Batman?”
I just stare at her, completely baffled. How the heck did she do that? And why?
Meanwhile, Archer’s just watching the whole thing unfold, an amused look on his face. “Seems like your familiar’s got quite the creative streak,” he remarks, clearly enjoying the chaos.
I can feel my eye twitching again. “Artemis, you’re unbelievable.”
She just grins at me, clearly unbothered. “You’re welcome.”
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. This is not how I imagined my first summoning going. Not at all. But somehow, with Archer here and Artemis doing whatever the hell she’s doing, I can’t help but feel like I’m in for one hell of a ride.
“Alright, Archer,” I say, trying to regain some sense of control over the situation. “Let’s just…focus on the task at hand. We’ve got a war to prepare for.”
“Sure thing, Master,” he replies, though there’s a playful glint in his eyes that tells me he’s going to be just as difficult as Artemis.
Great. Just what I needed.
