I was mindlessly scrolling through TikTok, watching videos of strangers' lives, when I saw her face. Ava. My best friend. Or at least, she used to be.
It had been weeks since we last spoke, since the party where everything changed. I had tried to reach out, to text her, to call her, but she had ignored me. And I had ignored her too, not wanting to push her into talking when she wasn't ready.
I stumbled upon one of Ava's videos, I immediately remembered that we haven't talked or seen each other since the party so I dialed her number but it was instantly disconnected. I felt really confused so I called her again and it got disconnected again. I started feeling angry but also sad after immediately realising that Ava wasn't trying to regain herself but she was AVOIDING ME. I was sad just thinking to myself why she was distancing herself from me.
At the thought of that, a hot tear rolled down my cheek but I wiped it away. I dialed her number again, determined to find out the reason she was snubbing me. It rang this time but she didn't pick. I screamed angrily as I threw my phone across my bed and ran my hands in my hair frustrated probably waking up my parents and my brothers but I didn't care, at this point all I cared about was finding out why Ava was snubbing me. I wanted to give up but not until I called her one more time.
I stood up and walked around the side of my bed to where my phone had landed, I picked it up about to call Ava but she beat me to it.
"Ava" I said with a sad tone making sure she knew how I was feeling. I waited for a response but I got none.
"What did I do, why are you mad at me, did I say something wrong at the party?" I asked trying to get her to respond but still got silence as a reply. I spoke again, "Ava tell me what I did" I demanded with a very serious tone but she still kept quiet."Ava" I shouted angrily to which I heard her gulp.
"You broke my trust" she literally spat back at me
"How?" I asked confused.
"Don't act like you don't know" she said angrily.
"Ava if I fucking knew do you think I would be asking, do you think I'm dumb?" I said angrily at her on the verge of crying."Do you like Luke?" she asked sounding heartbroken. My heart shook as I heard those words come out of her mouth. How did she know?
"That's why you stopped me at the party, because you were jealous. You didn't save me out of care, you did it out of jealousy". She spat out disgustedly at me. I knew that wasn't the reason why I stopped her, I did it because I didn't want her doing anything she would regret after sobering up."I'm sorry Ava, I know we made promises that leftovers where a no go but when I saw what you had seen in him I fell for him a little bit and I didn't tell you because I didn't want to make you upset. Yes when Luke told me he wanted to get back together with you I was crushed and when after you gave in ..... well the pain started to hurt even more". She wanted to respond but I continued
"Yeah I couldn't take it but I knew as long as it made you happy then I was happy as well. I don't like Luke anymore, I met someone else who is really nice, caring, loving and I'd rather have that for sure than try and see if I could make Luke and I work out. I didn't stop you because I was jealous, I stopped you because I love you and care for you and also Lisa told me to take care of her little sister so I did it for your dignity and your honour" I finished expecting her to say something in return but she just started crying.
"I'm so sorry Maya, for thinking that you would ever betray me. I know you were just looking out for me but it still hurt when Lisa told me what you told her while explaining my situation that night", oh so that's how she found out I thought to myself as Ava kept talking. "Can you please forgive me? Let me make it up to you, lemme take you to lunch later today" she pleaded.
"It's okay Ava, I wasn't mad at you, I was mad at myself for not knowing what made you angry and no sorry I have somewhere to be later today so how bout tomorrow?" I asked "Great I'll see you tomorrow" she said and I could Sense the smile on her face.
"Bye" "bye"
