We drove for hours, the coastline blurring together as we fled from Luke's grasp. Tyler's eyes never left the rearview mirror, his tension palpable. His grip on the steering wheel tightened, knuckles white.

"Where are we going?" I asked again, my voice barely above a whisper. The uncertainty gnawed at me.

Tyler's gaze flicked to mine, his expression reassuring. "A place Ava knows. It's secluded, safe." But his eyes betrayed his concern.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the sky in a warm orange glow, Tyler turned onto a winding dirt road. The trees grew denser, forming a canopy above us. The air thickened with the scent of pine.

"Almost there," Tyler said, his voice low, soothing.

The trees parted, revealing a small cabin nestled among the foliage. Smoke drifted lazily from the chimney, carrying the scent of wood smoke. A sense of relief washed over me.

"Is this Ava's place?" I asked.

Tyler nodded. "She's been preparing it for us. We'll be safe here."

Ava emerged from the cabin, her expression grim. "Inside, quickly," she urged, glancing around the clearing.

We hurried into the cabin, surrounded by the warm glow of candles and the crackling fireplace. Ava locked the door behind us, her eyes locked on Tyler.

"Luke's getting desperate," Ava said, her voice firm. "He's enlisted help. We need to lay low for a while." Her words sent a shiver down my spine.

Tyler nodded, his jaw clenched. "I'll keep Maya safe." His determination was palpable.

Ava's gaze softened. "I know you will, Tyler. But we need a plan." Her eyes narrowed, calculating.

As they discussed our next move, I wandered to the window, gazing out into the darkness. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, a soothing melody. But my mind wouldn't quiet.

Luke's words echoed in my mind: "You'll pay for what you did." What had I done? The question haunted me.

The night wore on, the fire burning low. Ava handed us each a cup of steaming coffee.

"We'll stay here for a few days," Ava said. "Then, we'll reassess." Her eyes locked onto mine.

Tyler nodded, his eyes locked on mine. "We'll get through this, Maya." His voice was filled with conviction.

I forced a smile, trying to reassure him. But the fear lingered, a constant companion.

Days blurred together at the cabin. We kept a low profile, avoiding any attention. Ava worked tirelessly, digging into Luke's past, searching for a weakness.

Tyler and I grew closer, our bond strengthened by our shared danger. We'd sit by the fire, watching the flames dance, our hands intertwined. The silence between us was comfortable

But the outside world beckoned. We couldn't hide forever.

"We need to get back to normal," Tyler said one morning, his eyes locked on mine.

"School," I whispered.

Tyler nodded. "We'll make it work. Ava's found a way to keep Luke occupied." His expression turned grim.

I took a deep breath. "Let's do it." The resolve hardened within me.

And so, we made plans to return home, to pretend everything was normal. But the fear still lingered, waiting to pounce.

As we prepared to leave, Ava's eyes locked onto mine.

"Maya, be careful. Luke's not the only one watching." Her warning sent a chill down my spine.

I nodded, my heart racing.

We were far from safe.
