Their fake smiles were as perfect as when we started working, the only difference was that, unlike at that moment, I already knew they were lying.

Listening to their hushed conversation not only broke my heart, it also helped me face the reality that I was denying: not everyone was going to love me and I had to learn to live with that.

I just need to find a way to make them vote for me, they don't have to love me, I told myself. I could live with that if Almec had made it for so long.

I lied to myself over and over again, thinking that it would make the pain of rejection lessen, yet I still felt the desire to cry accompanied by shame and anger.

"You did an excellent job today, dear," Mrs. Bergles told me after I put away the last toy. "We couldn't have done it so quickly without you two."

She finished closing the small window and approached me to hold my hands.

"If you ever need anything you can find me here Monday through Friday during these hours."

Mrs. Bergles smiled at me and for a second it seemed to me that she was being sincere. Maybe my work hadn't been a complete waste after all.

I was about to thank her when a woman walked past me, bumping my shoulder with hers.

"I'm sorry, I can be very clumsy sometimes," she told me.

My heart dropped when I recognized her voice, it was one of the women I heard in the hallway.

"Don't worry," I answered. "But you could pay more attention next time."

The woman looked at me with contempt and continued on her way to the piles of toys.

"So rude and she wants to be our luna," she murmured, making my anger resurface.

"I think you'd make a good luna," Mrs. Bergles told me before leaving, calming my nerves.

"All ready?" Geldra asked me from the door, she seemed eager to leave.

"Yeah, just let me grab my stuff," I replied.

More than ready to get out of the damn room, I searched for my bag on the coat rack, only to discover that it wasn't where I'd left it.

Almost desperate, I looked around thinking that perhaps it had fallen by accident. Still, I couldn't find it.

"Are you looking for your bag?" The woman who had just hit me asked me with a sickeningly sweet tone. "I saw it under the table."

Without answering her I approached the table and crouched down, confirming that she was right.

A small group of laughter erupted as I got on my knees to reach my bag. It was so far away from me that I had to crawl to reach it.

Here goes my pride, I thought before starting.

My ego was saved when someone grabbed the bag for me. I turned around to thank the person who had helped me, discovering that it was Geldra.

She stood up first and gave me her hand to help me.

"Hey, Winfred. If you feel like laughing, why don't you go watch your husband make a fool of himself during training?" Geldra asked the woman, leading me towards the exit.

"What did you say?" Winfred asked, offended.

"I'm just pointing out what everyone knows. By the way, his training ends at four, not six like he tells you."

A collective gasp filled the room and I couldn't help but laugh. Geldra did know how to attack their weak points.

"Don't worry about them, they think they're superior just because they're the youngest in the association," Geldra told me as we crossed the hallway.
