Zhao Weiran was not used to being at a verbal disadvantage. After Zhi Jiaojiao's relentless criticism, her face turned as red as liver, and she clutched her chest, ready to retort.
At that moment, the front gate suddenly sounded. Da Huang barked and ran outside, and a young man's voice was heard from the yard, seemingly asking if anyone was home.
Zhao Weiran's eyes flicked around. She snorted twice and thought to herself that she would tear off this little girl's pretense today.
Zhi Jiaojiao, irritated, looked at her and said, "Is there something you need? If not, I'll go attend to the guest."
It was unclear who had arrived, but with the approaching New Year, more relatives were visiting.
Zhi Jiaojiao headed outside, and Zhao Weiran quickly followed, hastening her steps to keep up with her. "Are you planning to go out and make excuses? Today, I'll make sure to educate you on behalf of your parents."
Zhao Weiran was convinced that the visitor was Zhi Jiaojiao's wild lover. She quickened her pace, eager to catch this person and show her sister what kind of daughter she had raised.
Despite calling out several times, no one appeared. The village chief's son, feeling puzzled, glanced at Jiang Heyan with an apologetic smile. "Mr. Jiang, please wait a moment. I'll check if they're home."
Jiang Heyan had a bandage on his forehead and was carrying various pastries. This was his last visit of the day, so there was no rush.
He smiled at the pillar and said, "No worries, we'll wait. Also, just call me Brother Jiang; we're about the same age."
Although their ages were similar, their capabilities were vastly different. The pillar nodded, feeling quite impressed with Brother Jiang. He was good at managing the mine and spoke pleasantly.
Zhi Jiaojiao opened the door a crack and stepped out, with Zhao Weiran pushing in alongside her. The door's threshold caught Zhi Jiaojiao's foot, causing her to nearly tumble out.
She staggered forward, about to fall onto the ground, when a hand suddenly reached out and stopped her.
Jiang Heyan awkwardly looked at his arm across her chest. Although he had saved her, it felt quite awkward.
In an instant, Zhi Jiaojiao regained her balance, and the two separated.
Jiang Heyan's hand hung awkwardly by his side, feeling redundant. The soft sensation of her touch lingered. He awkwardly didn't know where to look, but luckily, a young man nearby stepped in to help.
"Jiaojiao, this is Mr. Jiang from the mine, the son of Big Jiang. He's here specifically to visit about yesterday's incident."
Zhi Jiaojiao recognized him as the man who had given her the handkerchief. Zhao Weiran's eyes widened in surprise. She had mistaken him for Zhi Jiaojiao's lover. In reality, he was a big shot from the mine. A rich businessman was quite impressive. This young Jiang was tall and handsome, and the bundles of pastries he carried showed he knew proper etiquette.
Seeing the shiny car outside, Zhao Weiran was a bit envious. "Oh, is this car yours too?"
Zhi Jiaojiao gave her a significant look, but Zhao Weiran seemed oblivious. Clearing her throat, she coughed and tried to redirect Zhao Weiran. "Aunt, the tea leaves are in your room. Please fetch them so we can make some tea for Mr. Jiang and Brother Zhu."
Zhao Weiran had her own plans. A handsome young man like this would be a perfect match for their daughter Shengnan. She was mentally calculating and waved her hand dismissively. "This is your house, so I might not find it. You go get it. I'll keep Mr. Jiang company in the room."
