Allie's P.O.V

My heart pounded in my chest as we approached Jessie's table. This was the last thing I wanted—to intrude on her night, to face her while she was clearly enjoying herself with someone else. But there we were, standing awkwardly in front of her. I tried to hide behind Lola and Casey, my face already hot with embarrassment.

"Helloooo" Casey sang loudly to catch the attention of Jessie and her companion.

They both looked up at the same time, seeing Lola and Casey grinning down at them. Both of their faces the picture of confusion until Casey pulled on my arm to bring me into view. That's when Jessie's expression changed from confusion, to surprise, to almost.. embarrassed? I couldn't quite tell.

"Allie?" Jessie's voice was raspier than normal, probably because of the alcohol.

I took a moment before responding, surprised at how different Jessie looked tonight. She wore an olive green pant suit, the jacket of which was placed on the back of her chair. Her white shirt had the first couple of buttons undone, teasingly showing off just the right amount of skin for any admirers. Her sleeves were perfectly rolled half way up her forearms. All different sizes of silver rings graced some of her fingers on her perfectly veiny hands. Her long, wavy hair sitting so naturally over her shoulders.

I smiled awkwardly. "Hi, I umm, I'm sorry.. I tried to stop them from coming over but they-"

"Wanted to thank the person who gave our Allie a job" Casey grinned.

Jessie smirked and raised her eye brows curiously at me, which only made my cheeks burn even more.

We kept each other's gaze for a few seconds, her smirk making my heart pound like it was trying to burst its way out of my chest.

The moment was interrupted by a small cough from the woman across from Jessie who I had almost forgotten was there.

Jessie looked in her direction and quickly tried to redeem herself for not involving her date in the conversation.

"Shit, I'm sorry.. Allie, this is Emily" Jessie said and I reluctantly peeled my eyes away from her and towards the over dressed girl.

We smiled politely at each other and shook each other's hands, though it was clear she wasn't thrilled about the interruption. I needed this encounter to end so I spoke quickly.

"And these are my two best friends, Casey and Lola" I smiled, bringing my attention back to Jessie.

"Thank you for giving our Allie her first job in like forever" Casey slurred as I tried to pull her and Lola away from the table.

"I'm sorry" I mouthed with a shy smile as I continued to drag my friends away.

"The pleasure is all mine" Jessie said confidently, responding to Casey's 'thanks' but looking directly into my eyes.

I fumbled and stumbled slightly, the nerves making me act like the world's biggest nerd before finally the three of us reached our booth and sat down.

My mind was racing, trying to process what had just happened. Jessie had seemed surprised to see me, but there was something else too. I couldn't put my finger on it, and it was driving me crazy.

Lola and Casey were already chattering away about how stunning Jessie and Emily were, but I couldn't focus. My eyes kept drifting back to their table, unable to ignore the pang of something uncomfortably close to jealousy gnawing at my insides.

When it was finally time to leave, I stepped outside into the cool night air, pulling my coat tighter around me. I had texted Mark to come pick me up and knew he would be here any moment.

As I stood there waiting, I heard familiar voices and turned just in time to see Jessie and Emily a few metres down the street. Their bodies were close together, Emily's arms drunkenly draped over Jessie's shoulders. That same sting in my stomach came back and just as I was about to look away, Emily leaned in and kissed Jessie's lips softly.

My heart clenched, a rush of heat flooding through me as the image burned itself into my mind. For a moment, just a split second, I imagined myself in Emily's place, feeling Jessie's lips against mine. The thought startled me, sending a shockwave through my entire body. What the hell was wrong with me?

Before I could dwell on it, Mark's car pulled up, and I quickly slipped inside, grateful for the distraction. As I closed the door behind me, I leaned over and kissed Mark more passionately than usual, almost desperately. I wasn't sure why I did it—maybe to push the confusing thoughts of Jessie out of my head, or maybe, deep down, I wanted her to see it and feel the same sting in her gut that I was feeling.

Mark seemed pleasantly surprised as he started the car and began to ask me how my night had been. I tried to engage in the conversation but I couldn't help but glance out the window as we passed Jessie and Emily, surprised to see that Jessie was glancing right back.
