Chapter: Shadows from the Past

The sun cast long shadows across the bustling university campus as students hurried between classes, laughter and conversation filling the crisp autumn air. Tyler walked beside Alyssa, their fingers intertwined, but he could sense a subtle tension in her grip. She had been quieter than usual lately, her thoughts seemingly miles away even when she was right beside him.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Tyler asked, concern evident in his voice as he glanced at her.

Alyssa offered a small, strained smile. "Yeah, just a bit tired. Late-night study sessions are catching up to me."

Tyler nodded but remained unconvinced. Before he could press further, a familiar voice called out from behind them.

"Alyssa? Is that really you?"

Alyssa froze mid-step, her face draining of color as she slowly turned toward the voice. Tyler followed her gaze to see a tall, well-built guy with tousled dark hair and piercing blue eyes striding towards them, a confident smile plastered across his face.

"It is you!" the guy exclaimed, his eyes lighting up as he approached. "I can't believe it. After all this time."

Alyssa's voice was barely above a whisper. "Jason..."

Tyler's eyes narrowed, his grip on Alyssa's hand tightening instinctively. He sensed the sudden shift in her demeanor, from relaxed to visibly shaken.

Jason stopped in front of them, his gaze flickering briefly to Tyler before settling back on Alyssa. "Wow, you look amazing. How have you been?"

Alyssa swallowed hard, trying to regain her composure. "Good... I've been good. What are you doing here?"

"I just transferred this semester," Jason replied casually, his smile never wavering. "Thought a change of scenery would be nice. Didn't expect to run into you, though. What are the odds?"

Tyler cleared his throat, stepping slightly closer to Alyssa. "And you are?"

Jason extended a hand, his eyes assessing. "Jason Miller. Old friend of Alyssa's."

Tyler looked at the outstretched hand but didn't take it. "Tyler. Her boyfriend."

An awkward silence hung between them before Jason slowly lowered his hand, his smile dimming only slightly. "Boyfriend, huh? Well, nice to meet you."

Alyssa shifted uncomfortably, her eyes darting between the two men. "We should get going. Don't want to be late for class."

Jason's smile returned, a hint of something unreadable in his eyes. "Of course. Maybe we can catch up later? Like old times?"

Before Alyssa could respond, Tyler interjected, his tone firm. "We're pretty busy these days."

Jason chuckled softly, raising his hands in mock surrender. "No problem. See you around, Alyssa."

As Jason walked away, Tyler turned to Alyssa, concern and curiosity battling within him. "Who was that?"

Alyssa hesitated, her eyes following Jason until he disappeared into the crowd. "He's... someone I knew before I dated you. It was a long time ago, before everything with my dad."

Tyler sensed there was more to the story but chose not to push her, at least not here. He gently squeezed her hand. "You sure you're okay?"

She forced another smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. "Yeah, just surprised to see him, that's all. Let's get to class."
