Once the adrenaline settled down and I could finally breathe normally, I looked over at Toby, who was sitting in the passenger seat. The passenger seat. I glimpsed at him a few times, not saying a word.
Toby noticed all the short glances, and he put on a confused smile.
"What?" He asked, putting a hand on his chest as if he were trying to control his breaths.
I blinked, slightly dumbfounded.
"You're sitting in the front seat." I said, staring straight ahead.
Toby looked down at himself before his eyes scanned around the front of the car in realization.
"I am." He mumbled, zoning out into thought for a moment before blinking that away. "I guess it's not that bad, actually."
I huffed in disbelief, albeit smiling.
"All that fuss over not wanting to sit in the front seat, and now you're sitting here even without a seatbelt." I playfully remarked, rolling my eyes while shaking my head.
Toby reached for the seatbelt, then clicked it in securely.
"Maybe one step at a time." He said quietly, gripping the material of the strap.
I chuckled and rested my right elbow on the center console. Toby's eyes went to my hand, and before I could say anything, he grabbed my wrist and put my hand on his lower thigh.
"Okay, passenger princess." I teased, giving his thigh a soft squeeze.
Toby narrowed his eyes.
"I deserve this; I saved both of us." Toby pouted, crossing his arms.
I patted his leg, letting out a slight laugh as I steered the car.
"With your pretty pink taser." I smirked.
"Shut up." Toby said, looking out the window. His frustration expression turned into flustered as pink dusted over his pale cheeks.

After hours of constant driving, we made it to Illinois, slowly making our way to Chicago. It was early in the evening, and we were driving through the masses of fields that led the way there. There wasn't anyone else on the desolate road, so I decided to pick up the speed. We were pressing about 70-80 miles per hour on the straight path.
Toby was staring out the window, rather boredly, so I reached over and rolled down all the windows, making the cool breeze whip through the car. Toby was surprised at first, but he chuckled and put his hands in his hair, trying to keep it tame.
"What are you doing!?" He said it loudly through the abrupt woosh of the wind.
"Just enjoying the nice day!" I smirked back, keeping both hands on the wheel and keeping firm control of the vehicle.
Toby laughed a bit, and it contagiously made me laugh in return. The next thing I knew, Toby unbuckled his seat belt and leaned his head out the window, closing his eyes as he was enveloped by the rushing air.
Our adrenaline spiked, and like any adrenaline addict would, I pressed the gas to about 85mph.
Something about that moment made my heart swell.
This precious moment.
Driving fast enough to feel like flying through a golden field.
It felt like peace.
No worries.
No enemies.
No heartbreak.
It was like heaven.
I let go of the gas pedal, letting the car slow back to a solid 50 miles per hour as we went around a wide curve toward a more populated area. Toby retracted back into the car, his wind-blown hair more wild than before. He was panting, as if catching his breath from the rush.
"I've never been comfortable enough to do that..." He said softly, leaning his head back against his seat and closing his eyes blissfully.
I chuckled lightly.
My chest squeezed at his words. He was actually comfortable with me. I reached over, holding his hand as we came to a stop at a red light.
"We're almost free." I said in a sing-song voice. Before the light turned green, I leaned over and kissed Toby's cheek, just above the scar.
His face turned pink, and he pushed me away by the face. I chuckled again.
"Don't be so embarrassed; we've done worse than a kiss on the cheek." I chimed, looking ahead and pressing the accelerator.
"SHHHHHH, you don't need to say that!" Toby huffed, squeezing my hand back.
I rolled my eyes playfully, looking ahead as we were passing on the massive highways that led across the lake. There was a toll ahead, and the traffic was backed up a long way. I sighed, pulling out my wallet from the glove box.
I flipped through my wallet, taking out the loose change I had and holding it. I glanced out my windows and my mirrors.
My eyes widened as my eyes landed on what I saw in the rear view. My heart fell to my stomach, and I nearly froze with shock. I turned my head around, looking out the back windshield.
I could see Jeff and Liu in the truck behind us. Of course the maniac, Jeff, was driving. I looked over to Liu, who had a stoic yet solemn look in his green eyes and a pistol directed at our car.
I cursed and set the car in gear, slamming the gas and whipping the car into the other lane.
BANG.
The glass of the back windshield shattered, causing Toby and I to shout. I tried to straighten the car out to be in the other line, but another bullet rang through the car, missing both of us by only a few inches. Toby slouched back in his seat, and my body switched into flight as our car was T-boned by another.
The car shook, and though the other person in the crash was just a random person, they ended up pushing the car to the edge of the cement barrier that separated the road from the lake.
Toby cried out, unable to form a coherent sentence, only a few curses and my name as the car flipped upside down. Glass rained down on us, nicking my skin. The car teetered on the edge before leaning toward the dark blue water and falling in.
I sucked in my breath, still gripping Toby's hand as the windshield shattered as it met the lake, and my mind went black.
