My eyes flickered open.

It took a while to adjust to what I saw. I was in the middle of a field that rustled in the breeze. I rubbed my eyes with my right hand while pushing myself up with the left.

I could barely remember what happened as I looked around. The sky's were covered in an overcast of clouds for as far as I could see. The field looked like it had no end. I guessed that the sun was setting based on the color of the clouds and the occasional titter of the birds.

"Where the hell am I...?" I mumbled to myself, turning around to scope out the place.

My eyes landed on something in the distance. Better yet;someone.

Toby.

Before I knew it, my feet seemed to move on their own. The grasses brushing my hips as I hurried through them, towards the blurry figure in the distance.

"Toby!" I called out, waving one of my hands in the air.

The figure turned around, and I saw Toby's face, along with the face of another I didn't recognize.

From what I could tell, it was a blond girl, no taller than Toby. I watched as he grabbed her hand and pulled the girl in my direction.

"I was wondering where you were!" Toby said as he got closer. He let go of the girl and tackled me into the grass in a hug.

I let out a noise of surprise at his sudden strength against me, but wheezed out a laugh and wrapped my hands around him accordingly.

I nuzzled my face into his hair, which felt softer than silk, before parting the hug to kiss his face. Toby sucked in a sharp breath, his face turning red out of embarrassment as he tried to helplessly pull away from the affections.

"Y/N!" He stuttered out, turning his head away.

I chuckled, my eyes focusing on his face. I was bemused at the sight of his cheek fully healed over. No traces of a scar whatsoever. I brushed my thumb over the spot where I remembered the scar, causing his lips to curve into a genuine smile. I noticed how healthy he looked; his skin didn't look as pale, and the dark circles under his eyes were nonexistent.

Toby slowly stood up, pulling me with him. I was met face-to-face by the blonde girl; she wore a light purple cardigan with baggy sleeves and a pair of jeans.

Toby's eyes flickered with a thought.

"This is my sister, Lyra." Toby said, his smile growing as he gestured to his sister. "Lyra, this is Y/N." He gestured to me.

She gave a slight wave with an awkward laugh that I reciprocated to her.

Toby's sister.

Wait.

Toby's sister?!

How is she here if she's...

...not alive?

I blinked away the thought, looking around once more before looking at Toby and Lyra.

"Where are we?" I asked, staring at the golden grasses.

Toby didn't seem to have an answer, but Lyra looked up, tucking a fallen strand of hair from her face.

"It's difficult to explain," she started. "You've basically got one foot in the grave." She said, trying to break it to them softly.

I stood there, dumbfounded, before reaching out and clasping Toby's hand in mine.

"Are we dead or not?" Toby asked quietly.

Lyra shrugged.

"That's your decision. I am 'dead' personally; I've just been waiting for you." Lyra said to Toby with a smile.

"You've been waiting for me? It's been years. Why didn't you pass on with mom?" Toby added, looking overwhelmed and sad at the same time.

"I didn't want you to be lost..." Lyra said softly before shrugging. "Plus, it hasn't felt like years to me. Maybe a few seconds."

My eyes widened, but Toby's still looked sad. He looked up at me before looking back at Lyra.

Lyra gestured over to the side, drawing our eyes to a white light. It wasn't blinding, but it was definitely attention-grabbing.

"I wanted to cross over with you." Lyra smiled at Toby.

Toby looked torn. He squeezed my hand, looking between Lyra and me. I tilted my head, wondering what was going on inside his head.

"I feel like we haven't gotten to do anything together." Toby said softly, looking up at me.

The golden grass tickled my legs, and the wind blew through my hair. I felt drawn to the light as well, but felt like something was missing.

Lyra looked at us with a puzzled expression.

"You still want to live a little longer, don't you?" She said, tilting her head.

Toby let go of my hand before hugging Lyra tightly. She embraced him back.

"I can wait a little longer." Lyra said quietly, barely loud enough to hear.

Toby's eyes teared up, and the sight tugged at my heartstrings. I felt bad that he was leaving her for longer to be with me, but we have unfinished business.

Toby slowly let go of Lyra, stepping back until his hand reconnected with mine. He wiped his eyes.

"I'll see you then." Toby said softly.

I smiled warmly at Toby's words before looking at Lyra, but she was gone, as was the white light. I went to squeeze Toby's hand but found that I clenched around nothing but air.

A spike of panic entered my veins, and my ears started to ring with the sound of a faint and repetitive beep. I took a breath, and I opened my eyes.

I was met with the light overhead and a crowd of nurses and doctors around me. My chest heaved, and my eyes darted around. My body was covered in casts and bandages, along with an IV in my arms and a pipe down my airway, flooding my chest with oxygen.

The nurses and doctors looked relieved and also glad as they looked at me, some of them checking with the machines around my hospital bed.

"You've been through the wringer, haven't you?" One of the doctors said, checking over a screen with my vitals.

I cursed under my breath as the severity of my injuries caught up to me. I didn't have the strength to reply to the man, as my whole body felt like it was on fire.

"You're lucky you survived; along with your passenger, that crash was gnarly." The doctor said, flashing a smile. "You must have had an angel by your side."

My eyes widened at his statement. Toby survived. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this point, and the medications were keeping me in a loopy state of mind.

I looked around the white walls of the solitary room, a few of the nurses leaving and coming as they filled their rolls in the office. My breathing finally calmed to a steady pace, and my head sunk back into the white pillow.

I felt like I had been to Hell and back.

One of the nurses stopped by the side of the bed, offering some reassuring words.

"You'll both be just fine, but know you have a long time of recovery ahead of you." The nurse said. "Your friend's CIPA condition has made it easier for the recovery process, and I made sure to tell him you're alright."

The words the nurse said were clear, but I just made a noise of understanding because every movement felt like torture in my body.

I closed my eyes, trying to block out some of the pain and ignore the lingering staff. The last thing I could remember was getting T-boned on that highway. I must have been unconscious for the rest of it. I also felt like something was missing, but it didn't feel entirely bad.

I slowly drifted off into a hazy sleep, thinking about Toby.
