My POV
The noises around me were very faint, but I felt my insides starting to function again. Thank goodness, it wasn't my time yet. I slowly started to open my eyes and looked at my surroundings, it looked very bare and bleak, so I was definitely in the hospital. It was very quiet in here and that surprised me a little. I knew Edward wouldn't be able to get in and visit, but Bruce and Alfred not being here was a bit shocking. But, speaking of the devils, they actually came in right at this moment.
"Oh, thank Heavens you're awake Miss. Rebecca," Alfred stated and sighed with relief. "I'm so sorry Rebecca, this was all my fault, I'm a terrible big brother," Bruce started to beat himself up. Yes, he hasn't been the best brother, but at least now he's finally starting to notice and he feels guilty about it. "Hey, I saved you from ending up in my position, you're welcome," I smirked at him, yet it also hurt to talk. Alfred saw the pain I was in and put his finger to my mouth.
"Try not to speak miss, it'll ease your pain," he suggested. I just nodded. Bruce handed me a notebook where I could write down my thoughts for the time being. I wrote down, "How long have I been here and how long do I have to stay?" Alfred answered, "You've been out for 5 days, and the doctors want you to stay for another week, maybe 2 at the most." My eyes went wide at that. I can't stay here that long! Yet I didn't really have a choice in the matter. I then proceeded to ask another question, "Where's Edward and what happened with Tetch?"
Bruce answered this time, "Riddler disappeared and the police apprehended Tetch, so he won't hurt you again. If he tries to hurt you or any of us again, I won't let him." Bruce's words were actually noble and truthful. I smiled a genuine smile towards him, which is something I haven't done in a long time. "I know how eager you are with leaving, but we'll be here watching you," Alfred felt like he needed to inform me.
I chuckled a little to myself and wrote, "Don't worry, I'll stay put for once." I'm not sure if he believed me or not, but he went with it and kept me company for the rest of the day. Bruce brought in some food for us and we had a pleasant conversation, well it was one-sided since I couldn't talk, but it was lovely. They left me at night so I could get some sleep. I really wished Edward would visit me. I must've given him a good scare when I dropped dead like that.
But instead of thinking about the past, I tried to sleep that night. Unfortunately, I couldn't. Hospital beds aren't as comfortable as I thought they would be, so I just laid awake for many hours in the night. I was tired though, so I gave sleep another chance. After a couple of minutes, I heard the door to my room open. I panicked a little and hid under my blanket. "Good morning," I heard that familiar nasally voice.
Oh no, he found me. I thought he was taken care of when we left him at Arkham, guess not. I tried to remain quiet under the blanket, but my breathing started turning into hyperventilating. "At last, I finally found you, you can't escape me now in your condition," Cobblepot laughed at me. How did he know I got injured and was placed in the hospital? I didn't care that he was the king of Gotham, he shouldn't have gotten that information.
He lifted the blanket and I saw that evil smiled plastered on his face. "Time to go!" He cackled. I refused to get up, not that I could've anyway. "Playing hard to get huh? Well, this will show you," he removed the top of his cane which revealed a knife. I've already been stabbed enough! He came right at me and I felt that pain all over again.
I immediately sat up in my hospital bed and saw that I was the only one in the room. It was just a dream. Penguin is in Arkham and can't get me. After that scare, I didn't dare go back to sleep, but then I noticed the sun rising outside of the window, it was beautiful. The sun's rays reflected on my face, giving me a warm and promising feeling that good fortune would hopefully fall upon me. Maybe. All of a sudden, the door opened and I reacted exactly like I did in my dream, but it was only the doctor who came in to check my vitals. He wore a face mask which covered most of his face. "How are you feeling this morning?" He asked me.
"Alright," my voice sounded a little more clearer, but still a little scratchy. "Wow, you're actually making a miraculous recovery! At the most, you could leave tomorrow if you're doing better," he told me. "Thank you Doctor," I said. "You're welcome, by the way, someone is here to see you," he said and some random woman with blonde hair and thick makeup walked in, she gave me a really big smile that it was kind of frightening. "Do I know you?" I asked because I've never seen her before. "You will," she answered with a sinister smile.
At this moment, the doctor removed his face mask and I instantly recognized him. "Oh no," I said aloud. "Oh yes," the fake doctor retaliated. "Jeremiah Valeska," I figured out. "Correct, Penguin held me back for so long and I've just been in the mood to kill someone, looks like it's you, my dear," he explained. He look me soak in the fear. "But!" He startled me with that. "I am feeling very generous today, so my dear Ecco and I will instead drive you mad," Jeremiah added.
"I already feel mad with everything that's happened thus far, so you're a little late to start," I told him. "Well, all it takes is one bad day," he said and presented a small container. "My brother created a little toxin here that can drive anyone insane, for your sake, it'll kick in immediately," he chuckled. "Please don't," I sounded pathetic. I could somewhat talk, but I don't think I'm able to stand up without the feeling of being stabbed all over again.
"Too late," he attached it to the IV machine that was connected to my arm. I am very squeamish with needles, but knew right then and there what I needed to do. I mentally counted to 3 and surprised myself by pulling out the needle on 2. "Ow!" I yelled because I forgot there was tape attached as well. Jeremiah smirked at this move. "Impressive, didn't think you had the guts to do that," he remarked. The fluid from the toxin started dripping out of the needle and the color of it was staining the bed.
"Nice try," I started to get a little cocky. I feel like I have a bad habit of doing that whenever something good happens. Ecco decided to keep me still and also had a gun in her hand. "I have another idea, if we can't drive you mad by injecting it, we'll just cause the emotion to come all by itself," he stated. "How do you plan on doing that?" I wanted to see if he knew what he was talking about. "Ecco, come with me," she obeyed him by letting me go and walking out with him.
He just completely ignored my question, but then the realization hit. They could be going after someone I love! Bruce told me that happened with him once. Selina got shot by Jeremiah and it upset Bruce greatly. He's after Edward! I knew I needed to get out of here, but it hurt to much to try and stand. The best I could do was fall off the bed, which also hurt. "Ow.." I mumbled to myself in pain.
At best, I crawled out into the hallway and managed to find a phone. I had to call the GCPD and tell them to go after Jeremiah. Once it started to ring, Jim picked up on the other end. "GCPD," he said. "Detective Gordon!" I practically screamed on my end. "Rebecca? Boy, you never rest, do you," he chuckled to himself. "Enough about me, Jeremiah Valeska just threatened me earlier and now I think he's going after someone I love to drive me mad," I explained.
"Who do you think he's after?" He wanted to know. "I think it's Edward..." I answered honestly. Jim was silent for a while. I forgot that he didn't know about what was going on between me and Ed. "You and Nygma huh, you know what, this is Gotham, I'll just pretend it's normal. Anyway, we'll find both of them and put a stop to Jeremiah, we promise," he told me. "Thank you Detective, I appreciate it," I smiled on my side. "Also, get better soon," he said before he hung up.
I headed back to my room and tried my best to get back into bed. It wasn't easy, but 5 minutes of agonizing pain later, I finally made it up.
