I guess I'd never really considered the extent that the adoption process took, I knew they had to do a lot of checks to make sure you were adopting for the right reason, but I didn't realise quite how many checks they enquired. We'd found an agency, that had come highly recommended and we'd gone through the initial process of applying to adoption telling them what sort of age group we'd like which for us was 2 and under and for that online forum we got approved and were assigned a social worker called Liza. Today, Liza was coming to our house, to not only interview us, but to assess our home and make sure it was fit for us to bring children into. It all seemed a little patronising, but we understood why they had to do it, not everyone went into this for the right reasons so they had to be extra cautious.
" Tay, it's going to be okay, she's going to love us " Travis assures me, as I am scrubbing down the kitchen surfaces, wanting the place to be as spotless as possible
" you don't know that trav, I feel like she's going to judge every part of us, like we're criminals or something " I admit, biting my lip as we heard a knock at the door, I feel my heart rate speed up by miles as Travis offers me a sympathetic smile to which I nodded, signalling he could open the door.
" Taylor, Travis, it's so lovely to meet you " Liza greeted, stepping into our home, her eyes gazing around the entrance way.
" likewise " Travis shook her hand, clearly a lot more confident than me " please come in, can we get you a drink? " he offered
" Hi, thank you for coming " I held my hand out, as she flashed a warm smile, shaking my hand to greet me
" it's my job " she giggled " and a coffee would be great, thank you Travis "
Travis made her a fresh mug of coffee and me a tea which I gladly accepted, we sat around our table, Liza opposite Travis and I which was even more intimidating as she reached to her bag and got some papers and a pen out. I bit my lip nervously, Travis's hand resting on my thigh which was under the table, every so often giving it a rub to let me know he was here.
" so would it be okay if i asked you guys some questions " Liza announced. She seemed to be a bit older than us with mousy brown hair and piercing blue eyes. We were both quick to nod our heads, not wanting to do or say anything wrong. " how long have you two been married?"
" a little over a year " Travis said.
" so how come you guys are looking to adopt? " she asked, unknowingly of course.
" we uh, we can't have children of our own, and so this option just felt right for us, we want to a give a baby a chance a life that they may not have gotten " I explain, trying to bypass having to talk about our fertility issues.
" I'm glad you mentioned a baby, is that the age you are completely set on looking for? I know when you applied you said 2 and under so I'm just making sure " her head rose, after scribbling something down after our response to the first one.
" ideally I think so, we'd still liked to stick to 2 and under. We want to be there from the start sort of thing, you know? " Travis chimed in
" I completely understand and that's totally okay, I was just clarifying as some people change their mind. And how do you feel about siblings, do you mind if there's two of them as long as they fit your age requirements? " this was something Travis and I hadn't discussed, we never even considered the opportunity to be offered siblings so I had no idea how to answer and I could sense Travis didn't either.
