" look at you big girl, all ready to try some food huh? " I cooed to our now 6 month old Elise, who was sat securely in her high chair, a big gummy grin on her face. We had finally reached the stage where we could start weaning her and despite her still very apparent dairy allergy, the allergy specialist had given us a whole load of advice on what was best to start her on. I had Elise just in a diaper with a bib covering her front, knowing she was indefinitely going to get messy.
" okay Lisey, peaches or sweet potatoes? " Travis came over, two foods in a little plastic bowl for her. I had steamed the sweet potato previously, making sure it was in sticks that were easy for Elise to hold and gnaw at, and I had done the same with the peaches too.
" let her try the sweet potato first, then she can have the sweeter thing " I said, and so Travis placed a piece on the high chair tray, Elise blinking in confusion. " go on baby girl, you can hold it? " we watched attentively, trying to see if she would do anything herself and she babbled excitedly, her chubby arms wrangling around beside her. " here look " I guided her, placing the sweet potatoes between her chubby fingers and she looked at me curiously, before squeezing the contents in her hand.
" I don't think she's quite getting this " Travis chuckled and I let out a small laugh, waiting for her to do something. " that's it girly " he praised, watching as she brought the soft and now probably squashed vegetable up to her mouth, her little tongue fumbling to suck on it. As a small chunk broke off into her mouth, her face changed, a now disgusted look taking ahold. I couldn't help but laugh at her innocence, the way she was really trying to analyse these new flavours.
" what do you think, huh? " Despite her initial look of aversion, she replaced the sweet potato between her lips, squealing out in delight.
After she was done with that, which was evident with how she tossed in on the floor beside her, we switched out to some peaches on her tray, but surprisingly she wasn't as interested in them. It was adorable to watch her expressions, this was a whole new experience for her. It wasn't long though before she got fed up, fussing until we dutifully took her out, not that it really soothed any of the fussing.
" oh I think someone's ready for their afternoon nap huh? " I sway Elise gently in my arms, her hand clutching at my shirt as her cries soon softened, now just whining.
" do you want me to put her to bed babe? " Travis offered, but I knew he had a podcast to film soon.
" it's okay, I've got it. You've gotta record anyway " I smile and he nods. We had Elise's in a nap and sleep schedule, and we really tried to stick to it. I liked if she could have at least one nap a day in her crib, but sometimes with our jobs, it just wasn't possible, and contact naps were a lot more efficient.
Travis went off to his office, me taking Elise up to her nursery. For the most part, she slept great, and was almost sleeping through the night in her crib now, we were very lucky, not all babies adjusted so quickly. I sat down in the rocking chair in her room, rocking gently until I felt Elsie get heavy in my arms, her eyes blinking shut as I rubbed her back. When I was content enough that she wasn't going to wake up, I transferred her to her crib, tucking her giraffe comforter under her chin – she wouldn't sleep well if we didn't do that.
" hi Taylor, I was just about to put the laundry on, is it possible I get Elise's clothes from the hamper in her room. I swear to be as quiet as I can " Grace – our private cleaner – asked. We had hired her not too long ago, when we realised it was needed, I had been against it at first, but Travis convinced me otherwise and I'm glad he had as it was extremely helpful.
