LUCY DUNPHY ASSUMED WORKING WITH her dad would be the easiest job in the world – albeit a bit boring. She had accompanied him to many Open Houses throughout her whole life and so she certainly wasn't new to the concept. However, she wasn't expecting that working with her dad meant that she would be partnered up at Open Houses with the guy she had a one night stand with on the night of her twenty-first birthday.
Phil was clearly oblivious to the tension between the two young adults, but they certainly weren't. Constantly stumbling their words out, their cheeks reddened anytime they looked at one another. The awkward stutters when someone mistook them for a couple.
"I didn't regret that night at all," Lucy said to the camera, shaking her head slightly. Her dark locks flowing bouncing over her shoulders, "It was an incredible night. Had I known that I would be stuck working with him, though, then I never would've let him even approach me that night. Fuck!" She yelled, throwing her head back against the couch.
She placed her hands over her face and groaned loudly.
Lucy kept her eyes cast down as she prepared the table for the Open House. Neatening up the printed sheets that gave a generous description of the house along with Phil's number and email to contact him if anyone was interested.
She felt Diego coming over and standing next to her, having finished pinning the balloons onto the sign outside the house, indicating any passerbys that they were more than welcome to enter and take a look around.
She didn't look up, keeping her focus on the table, hating the feeling of warmth that spread through her body when she felt his arm brushing up against her own whilst he looked over her shoulder at the pile of flyers.
"Wow, this description makes me want to buy it," He confessed, chuckling slightly, "And I really don't like how the upstairs looks."
Lucy smiled to herself, "Thank you."
Out of her peripheral she noted Diego's head snapping to look at her. His eyes widening in surprise, "You wrote this?"
She finally looked up at him, nodding, "It's the only time I can flex my degree," She explained, shrugging slightly.
"What's your degree?" He asked, looking genuinely interested.
"Literature."
"And you're working in real estate because...?"
She sighed, "It was the only job I could find after months of searching," Lucy explained, watching as he nodded, "And I need to move out otherwise I'll go insane."
Diego chuckled. His eyes glued to her, listening to every word she spoke as if he was hypnotised simply by her presence. Anytime she would enter a room, he would find his eyes instantly drifting over towards her, forgetting about anything that he was doing.
"What about you?" She suddenly asked, "Real estate your dream job?"
"Honestly? No," He confessed, "But it is the realistic dream job."
She tilted her head and looked up at him. Even with her heels on he still towered over her, sometimes craning his neck down to get closer to her shorter frame, "And what is your dream job?"
He scratched the back of his neck, looking slightly nervous, "Honestly, I'd love to be an artist."
She grinned at him causing his body to instantly relax and feel at ease, "Really? That's amazing! So do you draw then?"
He nodded. Feeling more at ease with his dream job/hobby. Something that his family had always told him he'd never achieve. Art was never something any of them understood. Trying to push Diego into more academic roles. Main reason as to why he wasn't close to them anymore and moved far from them.
"Yeah, and paint sometimes."
Lucy grinned at him. She heard someone entering the house and glanced behind her, "You'll have to show me one day," She said, sending Diego one last look and squeezing his arm. She then walked off towards the visitors interested in the property. Leaving Diego standing by the table, his eyes following her until she turned a corner and disappeared from his view.
He couldn't help the grin that was spread across his face. Feeling like a giddy, love-struck teenager he felt like laughing at himself. He just couldn't believe that the woman that had been on his mind for the past year was now in his life as his co-worker and potential friend. Diego shook his head, cleansing himself of the thoughts of her dimpled smile and her captivatingly bright eyes. He smoothed down his blazer and walked away from the table, trying to focus on his job instead.
