7. AGAIN.

"I DID IT AGAIN," LUCY announced, bursting into Stacy and Tyler's apartment.

Stacy was lounging on the couch, spooning ice cream into her mouth lazily as her eyes focused on the TV in front of her where an early 2000s romcom played. Tyler was leaning against the couch, fast asleep with his girlfriend lying on his chest. Only waking up due to Lucy bursting in.

"Sorry, Ty," She quickly apologised before looking back at Stacy, "It's bad. It's real bad."

Stacy furrowed her brows. She sat up, letting Tyler's arms fall from her. She placed the ice cream tub with the spoon sticking out of it on the coffee table and paused the movie, "What's going on?" She asked, worry lacing her voice.

Lucy groaned and plopped herself down in the nearest armchair. Placing her face in her hands with her elbows resting on her knees, "I did it again, Stace..."

"Did what again?"

Even Tyler leaned forward, now curious as to what was going on. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes before focusing on the young woman sitting in the armchair, clearly distressed over something.

"I slept with Diego," Lucy mumbled. Her voice muffled by her palms and barely audible.

Stacy furrowed her brows and leaned forward, not sure that she had heard her best friend correctly, "Come again?"

Lucy groaned loudly and moved her palms away from her face. She threw her head back against the chair slightly, "I slept with Diego," She said, this time loud enough for the couple to hear her confession loud and clear.

Tyler furrowed his brows in confusion.

Stacy widened her eyes before letting out an excited squeal and jumping off the couch. She rounded the coffee table and jumped onto the rest of the armchair, hugging Lucy close, "That's so exciting! I saw how he looked at you. Oh, my God!"

"Wait, who's Diego?" Tyler asked, raising his hand slightly.

"He's the guy that was at her place when we picked her up for the..." Stacy whispered the next part and covered Lucy's ears as if she was a young child who couldn't hear her parent swearing, "double date."

"I know what you said, Stace," Lucy pointed out, moving her friend's hands off her ears.

"Ohh," Tyler hummed in realisation, "He was cute."

Stacy nodded vigorously, "That's what I told her!" She grinned, excited to see that someone else agreed.

Lucy rolled her eyes at the couple, "What the hell am I supposed to do now?" She asked, waving her arms in the air wildly, almost knocking her elbow into Stacy's face.

"What do you mean?" Stacy asked, glancing down at her friend, "Date him, obviously."

"I can't date him!" Lucy exclaimed, shaking her head, "I work with him. He works for my dad!"

"Oooh, a secret romance," Stacy sighed with happiness, "How romantic!"

Lucy shook her head, "You've been watching too many romcoms again, Stace."

Stacy grinned and shrugged. She always watched romcoms so 'too many' was never a thing in her eyes (even if she watched multiple a day, she would argue to say that it was actually 'barely any'). She twisted her body to face Lucy, throwing her legs over the armrest and onto Lucy's legs, practically strapping the shorter woman on the seat. She knew that if she wouldn't do that, Lucy might just run out of the apartment if things got too intense and she had to think too much about her feelings for someone.

Stacy placed her hands on Lucy's shoulders, just for an extra measure, "Why wouldn't you date him? Clearly there's something between the two of you. I mean, you slept with him twice now. Not to mention you met him a year ago and now you've been reunited. If that's not romcom material, I don't know what is."

Lucy let out a sigh.

She hadn't been in a proper relationship for what feels like years now. Apart from Toby (although they were never officially boyfriend/girlfriend), they acted like a couple for the couple of weeks they knew each other. Until she found out about his secret girlfriend he never told her about. Apparently he had a massive fight with her right before she was set to go off on a girl's trip to somewhere Europe, and then as soon as she came back and they made up again he dropped Lucy as if she was nothing.

And the guy before Toby, was Nathan. She met him at college and thought that they were compatible (not to mention she swooned over his British accent). He was a lot of fun to hang out with, but he too completely strung her along and although he didn't have a secret girlfriend hiding away anywhere, he had plans of going back to England immediately after graduating (plans he never once told her about, only mentioning it to her in a text message on his way to the airport).

It was fair to say that Lucy Dunphy hadn't had luck in the dating department.

At least not as an adult.

Her last relationship that was seemingly okay was when she was fourteen. It was puppy love with a boy in her class, Jayden. They liked each other and then stopped. And although their relationship lasted about a month, at least she hadn't been a second choice for him.

"You know how dating goes for me," Lucy sighed sadly, her eyes dull as she reminded her friend of the terrible guys she seemed to attract, "I can't risk the same thing happening when I work with the guy."

"What's life without a little risk though?" Stacy grinned. She let out a small sigh and squeezed Lucy's shoulders. Trying to encourage her friend to finally get back out there, especially with a guy she definitely liked (Stacy could read Lucy like a book. She knew how the shorter girl felt without her even expressing the emotion verbally and she knew that Lucy liked Diego much more than any of the other guys), "You deserve to be happy, Luce. Why not give it a go with this guy? You two clearly have a connection."

Lucy bit her lip as she thought about Stacy's words.

It seemed as if they really did have a connection.

After all, how often is it that one sleeps with someone on their birthday. Not find out their name, phone number or anything about them, only for them to come barreling back into their life in such a way that Diego Torres did? It almost did seem like fate. But Lucy didn't believe in fate. She inherited her skepticism from her mom.

"I work with him," Lucy pointed out again.

"A lot of people work with their partners," Tyler pointed out.

Stacy nodded in agreement with her boyfriend.

Lucy sighed and looked between the couple. She shook her head, "I-I just can't? Surely, I can't. God..." She groaned, placing her face back in her hands, feeling a headache coming on, "What am I supposed to do now. This is going to get even more awkward than before."

"Well, I still think you should give it a go," Stacy said, "We think that," She corrected herself, gesturing between herself and Tyler with her thumb, "Do us a favor?"

Lucy peeked her eyes from in between her fingers and nodded.

"At least think about it," Stacy said softly, smiling encouragingly at Lucy, "Maybe even try something more casual than dating with him. You deserve to be the first choice."

Lucy hesitated before nodding, "Fine. I'll think about it."
