Chapter 3

August

Legacy University, Gilmore Island, UK

Imogen

I hate to admit that Gilmore Island is a beautiful place. It's exactly as Rory always described it. Historical and mysterious, dark yet stunning. Most of the buildings are as old as the island itself.

Everything about this place breathes Rory Farrell to me.

Everywhere I look, I wonder if Rory stepped where I stepped – if he admired these views same as me.

The ache in my chest grows tenfold.

I'd gotten so good at hiding my tears from everyone that I sometimes forgot how debilitating the ache in my heart could really be.

I don't let myself think about the day I found out two months ago.

I don't let myself go back to that dark place. That dark, hidden place, where not only did I have to experience the worst sort of loss, but I had to do it alone.

I wasn't alone now.

And I wasn't crying anymore.

No, now was the time for action. Now was the time to find out what really happened to the boy I loved. I spent several weeks debating – going back and forth on if I could handle coming here.

But ultimately, I decided that I had to. There had been no news on who killed Rory, on who wiped his heart from this world forever. Maybe they stopped caring. But I never would. I never could. And I would find out who did this to Rory Farrell, if it was the last thing I ever did.

We just got all moved into the dormitory and I need a reason to leave the room, which becomes almost suffocating.

I love my cousins. They're closer than best friends. They're the other pieces of me. But it's hard to be around them right now. They buzz with excitement for the year ahead. Sophie and Ariana are excited, unpacking and talking about parties and socializing.

Tate disappeared to do who knows what, so I grab some books and come up with an excuse to go to the bookstore to see if I can exchange some for a cheaper price.

Campus is alive with activity and it's so beautiful that I can't help but stop and stare in awe. Despite the fact that I'm on a mission and have a lot to do, I can't help but pause.

There's a statue of Annabel Gilmore, one of the founders of the island. I squint my eyes as I see a familiar figure standing there, talking to some tall guy. It's Tate talking to Zane Sokolov – I realize rather quickly.

I made it my business to know every single member of the Black Wolves and Silver Knights before even stepping on this island. I know that those are probably the two most logical places to start when investigating Rory's murder.

I approach the pair of them. They're speaking in Russian, so I don't understand a word they're saying. But it's clear that Tate is heated about something and Zane is smirking all knowingly at her. I figure maybe she needs the assist.

I look between them, but the tension between them is clear.

I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that Chase ran off to Moscow to stay with Zane and Aleksander Sokolov the last several weeks of summer. Against his parents' and Tate's knowledge or wishes.
