Chapter 15

Imogen

The second gambling event is going almost as well as the first. People are looking to do something fun right before finals. It's almost winter break and there's a restless feeling on campus. People want to spend money, they want to drink, and drinking makes people talk...

I linger by the bar most of the night, helping out Fiadh and George where I can. I chat with Jemma and a few familiar faces from the Knights.

Romeo Abati is taking back shots and trying to get Ari's attention, but that's nothing new. I make my way over to him.

"How are you faring?" I ask, eyeing his chips.

"Not too shabby," Romeo slurs with a goofy smile. "Hey, do you know if Ariana likes Thai food?"

I clear my throat. "You'll have to ask!" I smile in a friendly-as-possible way.

He sighs, slumping against the bar. "Man, this whole war thing sucks ass. I don't like fighting with people."

I slump beside him. "You and I aren't fighting. I consider you a friend."

"You do?" Romeo smiles at me. "Gee, thanks Imogen! I think you're a friend too."

I smile back. "Besides, I'm not a Wolf. We're not at war..."

"Yeah, but our families are," he groans. "Not that I think Dad even gives a fuck about Rossi's war. Dad says he's lost it..."

Romeo blows out a raspberry, sipping his drink.

"That so?" I ask.

"Mmmhmm. Like father, like son. Gabe's totally lost his marbles too. He doesn't talk to us anymore, you know. It's just him and Anton...always fucking plotting away. Like this weekend. He's so unhinged. He was talking shit about the fight at the pits."

"What was he saying?" I ask.

Romeo blinks at me, as if just realizing he shouldn't be talking about this with me.

Ari is walking by. Ah, my reinforcements.

I nod at her and she makes her way over, smiling charmingly at Romeo.

"Hi Romeo!"

He beams. "Ariana!"

"Romeo was just telling me about the fight this weekend..." I say, nodding at Ari. She smiles knowingly at me before turning to him.

I'll leave her to it.

I make my way to the other bar only to stop dead in my tracks when I see none other than Gabe fucking Rossi standing there.

Oh, great.

After Nova has Gabe escorted out and the gambling event ends, I regret to have to call the Wolves to meet. Aleks is the last person on earth I want to see right now. But if Gabe is planning something, and it involves the fights this weekend, they need to know about it. Besides, Zane and Eli were there tonight and there's no way the Wolves won't find out anyway.

I do everything in my power not to look at Aleks, but it's so god damn difficult. Despite everything I've learned, despite finding that footage of him at the Knights mansion talking to Rory, I still find myself drawn to him...pulled like a magnetic string. Inevitable, and dangerous as hell.
