Chapter 29
Aleks
I stare at the pack of cigarettes.
I should really quit.
I know Imogen hates it. And it's a bad habit. I do hate addictive habits. I've gotten better at timing out the times I smoke.
Zane plops down beside me, a shit-eating grin on his face.
"Why are you sweating?" I ask.
"Do you really want to know?" he asks, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Jesus. No."
Zane chuckles. "Are you going to smoke one, or not?"
"I'm quitting," I say decidedly, leaning back.
"Ah, good for you! Want some nicotine gum? I've been trying to lay off too." He reaches into his pocket and passes me one. I stare at it. This feels like a moment of defeat. Imogen hates the smoking though. I sigh and grab a piece, shoving it into my mouth reluctantly.
Tate comes sauntering out with a plate of leftovers, sitting beside Zane.
"Always works up an appetite, my Tatiana," Zane grins proudly.
I wince. "I really don't want to fucking know."
"Why are you here?" Tate asks through a mouthful of food.
"Pardon me? I live here, Tatiana..." I give her a look.
She swallows. "No, I mean...I thought you and Gen were hanging out tonight."
"Nah, she's working on her paper."
"Hmm," Tate frowns. "She mentioned seeing you..."
Confused, I pull out my phone.
There's a text from my Dad. Actually, several.
And missed calls.
"Did you talk to Dad?" I snap at Zane.
The anxiety inside of me spikes. It had been so much better lately. Despite everything. But that familiar heart-racing, dreadful, out-of-control feeling grips me fast and strong.
"No," Zane frowns in confusion, checking his phone. But it's too late, I'm already calling Dad. I have a fucking terrible feeling.
He answers after one ring.
"Aleks. Are you home?" he snaps.
"Yes."
"Zane, your sister?" he asks.
"Yes, yes. They're both here. What's going on?"
"The safehouse was empty when we were doing surveillance on it before the attack tomorrow morning. He's gone. He isn't here."
My mind races with possibilities.
He's not there.
Where is he?
Something hard and cold grips my heart.
Where is Imogen?
"Get everyone to the mansion and lockdown. We think he's on the island."
