It was an ordinary day in San Francisco for Leila. She woke up at 11:00 in the morning and went straight downstairs without bothering to get ready. It was summer after all, and since it was summer, the first thing Leila did when she went into the living room was plop down on her favorite chair and log onto instagram.

She had one of the most successful Percy Jackson fan accounts and she was proud to say she had been the first. She checked her follower count, "20k and growing steadily" she thought to herself, a smile tugging at her lips. She had put a lot of time and effort into that account. Then she checked her news feed. Everyone was commenting on her Piper cosplay saying things like "You look just like Piper" and "You look beautiful!". Someone even said, "Wow! If you were a demigod you'd definitely be a child of Aphrodite". Leila was flattered but she didn't know what they saw. She had awkwardly wavy jet black hair and pale blue eyes (of course she had Photoshoped that for the cosplay) and she was so pale. Some of her online friends said that she looked like Snow White but Leila just thought she looked like a ghost.

She set down her tablet and looked where her mom's purse should've been. "She must be running errands" Leila thought, but then she heard the garage door opening.

She went outside to help her mom with the groceries but her mom, Miranda, yelled at her, "Leila! What are you doing? It's 11:00 and you're still in your pajamas? Go get dressed! We're going to Alamo Square Park at 12 to meet Jennifer and her daughter Kelsy and I will not have you looking like a washed up loner who doesn't have a life. Just because you are one doesn't mean you have to act or look like it!".

Leila knew that should've been hurtful, that she should've been offended, but her mom insulted her so much that nothing ever really got under her skin. Ever since she was little her mom had hated her. It got even worse when she'd met Jennifer. From that point on it was always, "Why can't you be more like Kelsy?" or "If only you were as beautiful as Kelsy, maybe you'd have some friends," and there was Leila's personal favorite, "Kelsy never does anything wrong, she's perfect!". It was always about Kelsy.

But the good news was her mom never insulted her in front of her friends. Miranda wanted everyone to believe they were the perfect family. That would give Leila some time to sit in a tree and start rereading The Mark of Athena for the tenth time. She went back inside and ran up the stairs to her room. Even though her mom had just yelled at her, she was excited to be able to read peacefully.

Leila had two closets, one with her clothes and one filled with clothes her mom made her wear when she wanted to impress someone. Leila's usual outfit would be a fandom t-shirt, shorts, and black Converse, but what she'd be wearing today would be a maroon tank top and the skinny jeans of death. She got into them with difficulty and looked in the mirror. She had to admit, she looked good, but she could barely bend her knees in those skinny jeans. She'd take comfort over looks any day. She brushed her hair and teeth and went downstairs.

"What took you so long?" her mother yelled, "It's already 11:30 and the park is twenty minutes away! You irresponsible little idiot, you better behave while we're there or so help me..." she ended in an angry whisper, her face red as a baboon's butt from lack of oxygen. Leila, unfazed but trying to hold back a laugh, replied politely, "Yes mother," as she clutched her book, her phone in her back pocket. They got in the car and went off to the park.

First chapter down and who knows how many more! Seriously though, I don't know how many more there will be...and I don't really know where I'm going with this but I had the idea last night so I whipped up this first chapter. Please tell me what you think!
