When Yoko's step-sister Aze stepped into my office, I felt her presence fill the entire room. This young girl looked nothing like Yoko. Her short blonde hair and blue eyes made it clear that she was not Thai. This young girl, who was clearly from England, was shorter and full of mischievous cuteness, in sharp contrast to Yoko's dark and tough air. But there was a seriousness hidden behind the sweet expression on her face, so I hesitated to trust her right away.
Aze glanced around the room after she entered. The curiosity in her eyes also showed how careful she was. For a moment, I tried to understand the purpose of this young girl's visit. I watched her expression carefully to understand what kind of game she was playing.
"Faye," she said, her voice soft but with a hint of tension. "The only reason I came here is because I'm worried about my sister." Her voice seemed sincere, but there was also a fragility in it. Was this young girl's reason for coming here truly sincere? Or was it her father's game?
I looked at her carefully, but didn't speak for a while. The mischievous glint in her eyes was combined with a slight smile on her face. But what she said were words I didn't expect from someone who had been with Yoko's father. "Are you here for your sister?" I asked, a hint of doubt in my voice. "Are you saying you care about her?"
Aze took another step toward me when I noticed that her expression had become a little more serious. "Yes, Faye. I am Yoko's half-sister, but that doesn't mean I am her enemy. On the contrary... I want to protect her. Against my father's games."
Her words surprised me. I hadn't expected her to speak so openly and directly. The doubt inside me stood in the way of my trust in her. "Why now? Why do you want to help now?" I asked, not taking my eyes off hers.
Aze took a deep breath before answering. "Because I know my father's true intentions. He brought me here because he wants to use me as a tool. To turn this war with my sister to his advantage. But I don't want to play his game. My mother and I were ignored for years. My father only cares about power and control. Now he's trying to use me to weaken Yoko."
These words shook me to my core. When I saw the determination on Aze's face, I knew she truly held a grudge against her father. But still, I was wary of such a sudden change of trust. "Aze, if what you said... is true, why didn't you come forward sooner? Why are you telling me this now?" I asked, still full of doubt in my voice.
Aze looked at me without looking away. "Because I didn't know much about him either, I only saw him a few times a year when he came for business trips, and I didn't know anything about him until he suddenly came and wanted to bring me to Thailand. He doesn't even know a little bit about what my mother and I have been through. If I don't help my sister, my father will destroy her. For me, Yoko is not just a sister... she is also the only savior of this war."
The sincerity in her eyes reinforced the seriousness of what she said. I approached her slowly, weighing my inner feelings. "These are very big things you're saying, Aze. But I don't know you. How can I trust you?" I said, trying to suppress the doubt in my voice.
Aze took a deep breath at my question. "It's not easy to tell you to trust me, Faye. I know I seem to be standing by my father. But give me a chance. If you trust me, I can help you protect my sister. We can thwart my father's plans. All I want is for Yoko to emerge victorious from this war." His words echoed inside me. To trust him or not to trust him... I had to make this decision. The determination I saw in Aze's eyes told me I had to give him a chance. But at the same time, it was risky to let him gain my trust so quickly. "Okay, Aze," I finally said, using carefully chosen words. "I will trust you. But remember, in this war, the slightest betrayal could destroy you completely."
Aze nodded with a slight smile. "I understand, Faye. I will not waste this chance you have given me."
Although her words still aroused doubts deep inside me, I had to take a step. Protecting Yoko should be my sole purpose in this war. And as this young girl said, perhaps Aze could be the key to changing the course of this war.
