Dracula's castle had returned to its magnanimous state after the renovations orchestrated by the population, but it couldn't move and teleport as before. The magical gears were still broken, so the castle remained immobile in the lands of the Belmonts. Sypha let out a long sigh, appraising the gigantic arched red and gold metal door that was the entrance hall to the castle where Alucard lived with Greta.
"Do you already know what you're going to say to your flying fanged messiah?" Trevor asked his wife, mocking her with an arched eyebrow, just to be sure.
"You know, twenty years ago, when I believed he was the savior of humanity and would stop Dracula, which I was partly right about... I never thought I'd want to kill him like I do now. " Sypha analyzed, with a tiny smile. "Do you want to be on my list too, Trevor?
Trevor just swallowed and nodded. Belmont, somewhat intimidated, knocked on the door with the handle of a dagger he'd pulled out of his boot. He and Sypha waited together. Soon, the grandiose double door opened onto a red carpet and unusual lighting for the time they were in. They entered the elegant place and the doors closed. The lamps were not oil lamps, but gas lamps.
"To what do I owe the honor of the Belmonts' visit so early?" Alucard's sarcastic voice filled the room, but only after a minute, he appeared in his teleporter behind the two of them just to play a little cat and mouse.
Sypha simply turned to where Alucard was standing and with a flick of her fingers, index and little finger raised together, summoned a fireball and showed it to Alucard with a smug smile.
"I'd like you to stop giving my daughter inappropriate presents. For example, an engagement ring, when you already have a wife, you bastard. " Sypha said gloomily. "Is it a mess now? You saw that girl born. " she scolded him, disgusted. "I mean, you literally took her out of me... Doesn't that tell you something, Alucard?
"You're the only one who called me by my human name. I can tell you're really annoyed with me for using Alucard instead of Adrian, Sypha... " Adrian realized, tapping his foot on the floor in his elegant black long boots.
"I thought it was the fireball aimed at your face that showed our dissatisfaction, but it's... it could also be her calling you Alucard, Dracula's spawn. " Trevor pointed out wryly.
"It's not an engagement ring. " Adrian explained to the girl's parents, to whom, yes, he had given a ring on purpose. "It was just an innocent present for my favorite goddaughter. " he replied succinctly.
"Innocent?" The word reverberated through Sypha and she laughed as if it were the joke of the century "Couldn't it be a necklace or a bracelet? Did it have to be a ring? Do you think I'm a fool? Trevor only gave me a ring after I told him I was pregnant and that's how he proposed. You always gave Selene jewelry, but never a ring. Now that every man in this damned place is taking the risk of proposing to her... you present her with a magnificent ring like that? " Sypha demanded and threw the fireball at him. "Are you underestimating my intelligence?
Alucard calmly put out the fire from his leg. He knew that if the elemental mage had really wanted to hurt him, she would have done so.
"Far be it from me to underestimate the intelligence of an orator who knows everything except how to make written records of her own people. " Alucard teased, at Sypha's weak point. "No, it couldn't be a necklace or a bracelet, it had to be a ring and Selene loved it." Rebutted Alucard, unchanged.
Sypha sighed and massaged her temples, she knew Adrian could be quite childish at times, but now it was her daughter they were talking about. She formulated, trying not to freeze him alive and not to ask Trevor to shatter the ice statue he would become with the whip, or just the easiest thing, which would be to incinerate him:
"And Greta... what does she think?
"I don't know. She left me." replied the dhampir, crossing his arms and appraising his friends. "If you've done what you had to do around here... " Alucard began, confronting his friend. "You'd better go now, Sypha. Selene must miss you.
Sypha was moved by the way Adrian knew how much Selene missed her. It shook her to the core. How Adrian knew Selene, to the point of knowing her despair when he was away from her.
"I've seen her," said Sypha, with a small smile. She was waiting for me at the entrance to the village, dressed in one of the magnificent dresses you gave her and holding a parasol. " explained Sypha. "Beautiful as always.
"Good. " Adrian replied with a small smile. "That little girl always cried when she missed you, when you left her in my and Greta's care. I'm glad you've seen each other.
Sypha took a deep breath. She couldn't hate him when he acted like this. Trevor probed his wife, knowing that she would drop the subject of the ring if they continued like this. Trevor squeezed Sypha's hand, gently, as a reminder.
"Don't get me wrong, Adrian... " Sypha managed to stand up for herself, she seemed to be thinking of the best way to put it, though. "You've seen Selene grow up... I don't like the way you look at her now. Neither does Trevor. I'd like you to stay away from her for a while... until you've sorted yourself out with Greta, my daughter understands how she feels about you, you understand how you really feel and then you can each decide what you want. That's what I'm asking as a friend and so that no one gets hurt.
"I understand. " Adrian agreed with the red-haired woman. "I'm going to stay away from Selene until I've sorted myself out and she understands how I feel too.
Sypha let out the breath she had been holding. Trevor was amazed at how Sypha had managed to convince Alucard.
"It was good to see you. " She said goodbye, patting the tall dhampir on the shoulder.
"Always good to see you too, Sypha. " Adrian agreed with a friendly smile, which showed his fangs slightly. "I hope you missed your friends and your grandfather on your trip.
"Yes, but from my grandfather it was a final goodbye. " Sypha answered, without further details, but her stunned and sad eyes said a lot.
Sypha then turned to Trevor and gave him her hand. The monster hunter took his delicate hand in his calloused one, kissed the back of it with surprising chivalry for someone so rough, and they left Alucard's castle. Alucard watched them, torn between the resentment he had always felt that they had abandoned him and left together and happiness that Sypha and Trevor had found companionship and happiness in each other. It was a bittersweet taste.
