It was a rainy Sunday afternoon, and Andy and Elly decided to go through their photo albums again. They had snuggled up on the couch together and made themselves some tea and snacks.
"Remember when we met in college?" Elly asked Andy.
"Of course! How could I ever forget?" Andy replied.
When Andy graduated from high school at the age of 19, she went to college to study to become a cook. During her four years in college, she met a lot of new people. She met Elly in her third year while on a skiing holiday with some friends who were taking the same course.
Elly never went to college. Her parents weren't very wealthy, and the only way she could afford the holiday was by working part-time at the resort as a barista. Elly graduated from high school at 20 years old. It helped that she looked two years younger than she was, so she didn't get bullied much. The teachers decided she wasn't mature enough to graduate yet, so she was held back in her final year.
She struggled a lot to maintain interest in repeating the year. It frustrated her to be held back due to a condition she couldn't control. She started working and skipping a lot of school. She barely graduated but did manage to get her degree. Since her parents couldn't pay for college, she decided to work full-time as a barista at a small restaurant to slowly raise the funds to attend college herself.
The girls excitedly grabbed the stacks of photo albums that started from when they first met each other.
"I can't believe how far we've come," Elly said as she stroked a picture of a 22-year-old Andy and a 21-year-old Elly.
"I know. It feels surreal how long we've already known each other," Andy replied. She flipped the page to a picture of the ski resort, and the girls got absorbed in the story of how they met.

Elly was skiing down from a high mountain when she lost control of her skis. She started swerving a lot and came dangerously close to a crowd of girls standing at the foot of the hill.
She screamed in terror and waved her arms as she desperately tried to avoid the girls. The group noticed the quickly approaching Elly and began rushing in different directions, trying to avoid what would be a painful collision.
As Elly finally reached the chaotic group, she made a sudden twist with her stumbling skis. She was now making a 45-degree turn and collided straight into one of the girls. They both fell down with a scream, Elly landing on top and the other girl underneath her.
"Are you alright?" Elly asked in shock as she lay on top of the girl she had just toppled over.
"Yeah," the girl said, "but it would be even better if you got off of me," she added jokingly.
Elly quickly got up and reached out her hand to pull the girl to her feet.
"I'm so, so incredibly sorry," she stammered. "How can I make it right?"
"I'm Andy," the girl said with a smile. "And if you buy me a mug of hot chocolate, I think I'll be able to forget what happened."
"Of course!" Elly said, relieved that the stranger seemed to be taking it well. "I'm Elly," she added a second too late, trying to be polite by introducing herself but making it sound a bit awkward.
Elly and Andy made their way to the ski lodge's cozy café, the adrenaline from their unexpected collision still buzzing in their veins. As they entered, the warmth of the lodge enveloped them, a stark contrast to the biting cold outside. The scent of freshly brewed coffee and hot chocolate filled the air, making Elly's nerves settle a little.
They found a small table near a crackling fireplace, and Andy flashed a grateful smile as she took a seat. Elly quickly went to the counter and ordered two mugs of hot chocolate, her hands still trembling slightly from the near-miss on the slopes. She couldn't help but glance back at Andy, who was taking off her ski hat and shaking out her hair. Elly's heart skipped a beat—Andy was undeniably cute, and the way she had laughed off the whole incident made her even more endearing.
Returning to the table with their drinks, Elly set them down carefully and took a seat across from Andy. "Here you go," she said, trying to sound more composed than she felt.
"Thanks, Elly," Andy replied, her eyes sparkling as she wrapped her hands around the warm mug. "So, are you always this adventurous on the slopes, or was I just lucky today?"
Elly blushed and let out a nervous laugh. "Honestly, I'm usually pretty good. I guess I got a little overconfident up there."
Andy chuckled, taking a sip of her drink. "Well, I'm glad you did. It's not every day a cute girl literally falls into my lap."
Elly's cheeks flushed deeper at the compliment. "You're really sweet," she said, looking down at her hot chocolate. "I'm really sorry again about earlier. I didn't mean to almost take you out like that."
Andy waved her off, smiling warmly. "Don't worry about it. It's a fun story to tell, and I got free hot chocolate out of it. So really, it's a win-win."
They both laughed, the conversation flowing naturally from that point on. They talked about their time at the ski resort, their hobbies, and their lives back home. The more they chatted, the more Elly realized how much she enjoyed Andy's company. There was an easy connection between them, a shared sense of humor and an underlying chemistry that Elly couldn't ignore.
As the afternoon wore on, the snow began to fall more heavily outside, creating a picturesque scene through the café window. Andy glanced outside and then back at Elly, her expression thoughtful.
"You know," Andy began, her voice a bit more serious, "I'm really glad we ran into each other—literally." She grinned, and Elly giggled. "I'd love to spend more time with you, maybe when we're not crashing into each other on the slopes."
Elly's heart fluttered with excitement. She bit her lip, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'd like that too. How about we meet up tonight for dinner? There's this cute little restaurant near the lodge I've been wanting to try."
Andy's smile widened. "That sounds perfect. It's a date, then."
Elly nodded, her own smile matching Andy's. As they finished their hot chocolate and prepared to head back out into the snow, both girls felt the warmth of something new blossoming between them—something that started with a crash and was quickly turning into something much sweeter.
(Just to be clear: Ellly is 23 years old and Andy 24.)
