"Why not?" JJ asked me as he leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Because" I replied flatly.

"B, come on. It's our last chance" he insisted

Kie and JJ had arrived half an hour ago at my house to try to convince me to go with them to Wilmington for the cross.

"J, let her, she has every right to say no" Kie interceded on my behalf.

"No, Kie" he held up his hand as a sign for her to stop talking "Bree, Kie's parents just called me a liar and a thief, I won't take no for an answer from you."

"Yeah? Well, how about this? less than two months ago I had an abortion, my ex-boyfriend attacked me, I lived in an island, I was kidnapped by a thuggish tycoon and I lost my scholarship to Stanford" I sighed as I crossed my arms "I think I have a right to refuse this, right Kie?" I looked at her.

She just nodded "Let's go JJ."

JJ shook his head and headed for the door of the house leaving quickly.

"He's stressed" Kie tried to calm me down.

"I know"

"You know, he felt really bad about you losing the scholarship, maybe it's his way of making things right, even if it wasn't his fault"

"I don't need him to fix anything for me."

Kie nodded and started walking towards the door.

"Careful, if someone gets hurt you know who to come to" I said before she left.

"Oh shit" I cursed to myself as I realized I was already running late for my shift at the bar.

I grabbed my purse and car keys and hurried to the exit.

---

"You've got to be fucking with me" a familiar voice said a few feet away from me.

I turned on my feet as I heard the voice while I dried a glass that had just been washed by my shift partner.

"Hello, sunshine" I gave him a fake smile.

"What are you doing here? I thought you might have lost your job" he asked me as he leaned his elbows on the bar.

"Well, if you didn't know, not all people steal gold crosses, so we have to work for money, dear" I said quietly as I moved a little closer to the bar leaving the glass ready to use.

Rafe rolled his eyes as he tapped his fingers on the bar.

I cleared my throat "Same as always for starters?"

"Add it to Cameron's tab."

I walked over to one of the coolers behind me and grabbed a beer "Daddy's boy" I uncapped it and placed it in front of him "Enjoy".

He just sighed and took it bringing it to his lips "Keep up the attitude and there will be no tip" he said before walking away.

Fucking idiot

"Do you know him?" my partner asked me as she approached me.

"Unfortunately."

"He's cute" she smiled a little

"It's her ex-boyfriend, you know" Kelce interrupted as he leaned on the bar "A beer please, Bree"

"It's your ex!?" Sofia asked in surprise

"No worries, all yours" I said as I passed the uncapped beer to Kelce, Sofia just lowered her head and fixed another customer a drink and then walked away a little bit

"Damn, where did the love go?" Kelce asked.

"You go and ask him that"

"He still thinks about you, you know?" he took a swig of his beer.

"You want me to run back into his arms with that comment?" I raised one of my eyebrows.

"Does that mean I still have a chance?"

"Go away, Kelce," I said as I let out a chuckle and rolled my eyes.

Then I felt someone's gaze

That someone was watching our interaction closely.

---

"Shit!"

"Yeah, shit" Sarah said.

"We should have listened to you and done nothing, JJ risked his life stupidly" Kie continued.

"Fucking Rafe" JJ said as he threw some rocks into the lake.

Turns out there was no cross, or at least not on that train, it was all a trap.

"Well guys, you tried" I tried to calm them down.

"Who do we have here?" We heard Big John say as him and John B approached us.

We all automatically cheered and ran to greet Big John.

"Little B" He opened his arms to me and I hugged him.

"We missed you" I said with a smile.

It was good to know that something good had come out of our little adventure.

The mood lightened a bit after John B brought out some beers and we all sat down to catch up on what had happened over the last few days.

John B and his dad had been doing some research in Charleston but apparently, were unsuccessful, as were the Pogues.

After a while, we all went home.

For some reason, I felt something was off.
