The Dark Forest

I released the cigarette smoke from my lungs, I had never been a regular smoker before but these last few weeks cigarettes had become a great stress reliever, well, a reliever of all my emotions to be exact.

A week ago was my parents funeral, they died in a car accident, a trailer lost control of the brakes.

Less than two hours ago I had arrived to the Outer Banks, my new family's home, my aunt and uncle had taken custody of me, so this would be my new home from now on.

"Can I have a smoke?" I heard Rafe behind me

Without a word I held out my cigarette and he took it, automatically taking a puff.

"I didn't think you smoked" he said as he blew out the smoke "I thought your boyfriend, Sean, was coming to visit you before he went back to school".

"His name is Scott, and no. We're not even dating anymore" I said as I lit another cigarette.

"What happened?"

"He cheated on me"

"Shit" he took another puff on the cigarette "What a jerk"

I blew out the smoke from my cigarette

"I thought that would make you happy, he cheated on me with a cheerleader."

"No, I hope his dick falls off"

I let out a laugh

"Cheerleaders are overrated, anyway," Rafe continued.

This was one of the first coherent conversations Rafe and I had, usually he always annoyed me or we would fight, I actually had a better relationship with Sarah.

"By the way, Rose told me that tomorrow we are going to go shopping for clothes with Sarah, the clothes you have are not for this type of weather, city girl"

I nodded my head

"Well then, I better go inside, dinner is almost ready" he said as he put out the rest of the cigarette with the sole of his shoe.

"Hey," I said making him turn to look at me "Thank you for coming, I don't like smoking alone."

He nodded and turned to start walking towards the house "Tomorrow at the same time" he told me without turning to look at me.

The next day I returned to the dock and minutes later he arrived.

I would never have thought that this would be our routine for the next six months.

"Rafe, I'm not going to go skinny dipping in here, the water must be cold. Besides, we don't know what animals are here."

"There are only fish, stop whining and let's go" he took my hand pulling me towards the shore of the beach

From one second to the next, Rafe no longer had any clothes on. "Clothes off, baby."

"Turn around," I said as I grabbed the hem of my shirt.

"Bree, I've literally been inside you, I don't think it'll be a problem if I see your boobs" he said while rolling his eyes.

I rolled my eyes in the same way and proceeded to undress.

"Okay, ready." I said after a few seconds
