(Sam’s P.O.V.)
I start to open my eyes. I groan as I feel some rib pain. I sit up and looked around, letting my eyes get adjust to my surroundings. I saw a fire, and I thought to myself that someone would have had to make that. I keep looking around. Finally, my eyes land upon this girl who is sitting cross-legged next to me. She has light tan skin, beautiful wavey ebony blue hair in a high ponytail with bangs, gorgeous ocean blue eyes, and a lot of freckles on her face. I see there is a black tom cat with yellow eyes curled up next to her, I can see that the cat has a collar. I see that the girl has some scars over her body. She is wearing clothes that have some rips through them. A t-shirt with a tree on it and words above the tree saying, “the paths we choose are like tree branches, some with dead ends and some with finish lines”. She was wearing brown jeans, with a brown bag over her body and blue sneakers. For some strange reason, this girl seems familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. She just smiles at me, my eyes widen, how warm that smile on her face feels, that I begin smile too.

“I see you are awake,” she says politely to me.

I didn’t want to be rude by asking who you are? so I asked her, “who are you?”

I mentally facepalm myself, yea, did not go the way I wanted to, but she seemed to smile, nonetheless.

“My name is Hailey Smirk. You may not remember me, but I am your friend, yea. I don’t really remember you either,” she says, sheepishly rubbing her neck with her hand.

I shake my head; my eyes start to move to the cat curled up next to her. Hailey had seemed to take notice of what caught my attention, she smiles at me.

“Oh, this is Rain, my cat companion,” she says.

“He’s cute,” I say.

Then she reaches in her bag and grabs out a book. She opens to a page and grabs out a piece of paper, and she hands it to me, I look at it. It looks like a letter to herself; I start to read it, and when I am done with it, I pass it back to her. She puts it back in the book and then puts the book away. She stands up, and Rain jumps on her shoulder as Hailey dusts herself off.

“We should probably leave before that vine comes back, I personally do not want to be here for that,” she says jokily.

I chuckle.

“Yea, we probably should,” I say.

I start wondering why I am trusting her so much; I don’t know her, so why I should trust her. But I decided to trust her because I do not want to be here when that vine returns. And who knows what would have happened if she hadn’t been there to save me. So, I decide to follow her, I try standing up, but instead, I stumble and fall back onto the ground.

“Ow,” I say, feeling pain in my bottom.

I hear a giggle.

“Here let me help you,” I hear Hailey say.

I look up and see her hand reaching out, I smile and gladly take it. As she helped me to my feet, careful to make sure that I didn’t fall. As I stand up, still holding her hands, I look up into her eyes, and I start to feel dizzy as memories start to unfold in my mind.

(Flashback)

“Come on, Sam, you can’t hide from me forever,” a 5-year-old girl says.

“Boo, ha, ha, got you, Hailey,” I say.

I start laughing.

“You scared me, Sam,” Hailey says heavily, breathing, holding her chest a bit.

“That’s the whole point of the game, silly,” I say jokily with my hands on my hips.

“Oh, I will get you for that,” she says, starting to smirk.
