"say my name and everything just stops."
The day of the exam had arrived, and after being there for only two seconds given the fact that you just stepped off of the bus, you wanted to go home.
"Ugh... I'm getting kind of nervous." Jirou says.
"I wonder what they're gonna make us do. Ugh. What if I can't get my license?" Mineta whines.
"Mineta. Don't ask if you can. Say you will." Aizawa tells him.
You already knew all of the details of the tests.
Due to the fact that Madam President wanted you to sort of help out with overseeing the test, she had given you details on each portion of each test.
Every word that your teacher was saying would go in one ear and out the other. You didn't even want to be here right now. This was stupid to you.
You walk over to Izuku, gently punching his arm. "I have to head up now. I'm sure you'll do great! It shouldn't be too hard."
"Thank, (y/n)! I needed that."
He needed that the same way you needed some reassurance from him a few nights ago.
You would be spending part of your day with Yokumiru Mera, one of the higher-ups of the Commission that would be overseeing the exam.
You walk into an office in the stadium that the exam was being held, sitting down in an office chair and mindlessly spinning yourself around while talking to Mera.
"Mr. Mera, what am I even supposed to be doing? I mean, what gives?"
"Didn't Madam President already explain this to you?" He asks, sighing as he always would, "You have to keep track of the number of students who pass and give us updates on when the maximum amount of students who are allowed to go through to the next test make it."
"But that sounds so boring. Why can't you just do it?"
"A little something called Madam President wanted you to do it, so I'm not questioning it."
A bit of time had passed, and you standing behind Mera who was standing at a podium on a stage in front of hundreds of people.
"Okay, then. Let's do this exam thing. I'm from, uh, the Heroes Public Safety Commission. Name's Mera. My Circadian Rhythm is so screwed up. Ah, man. I've been swamped lately and I haven't gotten much rest. We're too short staffed. I'm so tired."
The poor man looked like he was going to pass out if he didn't catch a break any time soon, but you weren't going to do anything about it.
Not that you didn't care, you totally did.
But you just didn't feel like it, so you weren't going to. It wasn't your responsibility to make sure a grown man was getting enough sleep.
"With that confession, I'll now begin orientation. So, about the content of this license thing. Basically, 1,540 examinees compete in a free-for-all exercise or whatever we're calling it this year."
He really wasn't giving them a whole lot to go off of with this.
"See, we've got a lot of pros around, and since Stain was arrested, many people have expressed doubts about the status of heroes in society. But, when you really think about it, getting paid makes sense. If you're going to risk your life to save someone, why shouldn't you get a reward, huh? That's just the way the world works."
You kick his ankle as lightly as you can, trying to get his attention.
Once he turns to look at you, you speak up, "That isn't really necessary right now. You should tell them more about the test itself."
He turns back around, not saying a single word in response to you.
You couldn't tell if he had taken your words into consideration or if he was just flat out ignoring you.
"Anyway, whether they're in it for compensation or out of a sense of duty, we've got too many heroes working together in the streets these days to keep villains at bay. Honestly, the time between when an incident begins and when it's resolved is ridiculously short."
You were sincerely confused at Mera's words at all times.
How was the short amount of time that it took to resolve an incident a bad thing?
"You are all here trying to receive your provisional licenses, so you'll be swept up in this tiresome mess yourselves pretty soon. Those of you who don't have the speed, frankly, just won't cut it. Which is why that's what you'll be tested on. The first 100 students to fulfill the requirements will pass today."
You could see the nerves on everyone's faces reach an all time high when those words left his mouth.
It was likely that everyone there had been told that at least half of them would pass.
Hell, you told everyone in your class that out of everyone taking the exam half of them would pass.
You knew, of course, that the percentage of people who would actually pass this year had gone down drastically.
You just weren't allowed to tell anyone. You were sort of sworn to secrecy.
"I suppose I should say something about luck. So, anyway, here are the basic rules. The examinee will put three of these targets on his or her body. They can go anywhere you want as long as it's an exposed area. So no soles of the feet or armpits. Each of you will also have six of these balls. The targets are programmed to light up whenever they've been touched by the balls." He explains.
You were forced to demonstrate for some reason. You were holding up one of the targets in one hand, a ball in the other.
You tap the target with the ball, showing how it would light up upon being hit.
"If all three targets light up, you're out. Oh, and the person who lights up your third target will get credit for your defeat. You get through this round by taking down two people. Got it? Good."
After a few more minutes of Mera talking, which you blocked out, you were told to go find a seat in one of the higher levels of the stadium.
You chose to sit next to your teacher, who you walked over to with a smile.
Miss Joke was talking his ear off, which you knew he hated. "I'm surprised you still have 20 students! It's unusual for you not to have expelled someone. You must actually like your class this time."
"Not really." He responds, his gaze fixated on the students below.
"Wow, that hurts. I though that you did like us."
You knew what was pretty much bound to happen down there.
Everyone in your class was going to be targeted, mostly because of the sports festival.
You watched these exams at least once a year, and it was always UA students who were targeted.
Everyone knew everything about them.
Their Quirks, their fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses, everything they needed to know to figure out how to beat them in a fight.
Oh, this was going to be a sight to see.
