Hyunjin's leg bounced anxiously under his desk, the soft thud of his shoe against the floor a steady beat against the chaotic rhythm of his thoughts. His eyes were glued to the clock on the wall, each tick of the second hand dragging out time as if it were mocking his impatience. The low hum of chatter around him blurred into a single, dull murmur, his mind too preoccupied with the events of the previous night to focus on anything else.
He had spent the morning scouring the crowded hallways, his gaze darting from face to face, searching desperately for the boy from the earthquake. But despite his efforts, he found nothing—no trace of the boy who now held his deepest secret. Now, forced to return to class, he was left with no choice but to wait, his stomach twisted in tight knots of unease as he tried to imagine how their next encounter would go.
He had saved the boy, pulled him from the crumbling wreckage just in time. But the wail of approaching sirens had forced him to leave the scene before anyone else could arrive. The image of the boy, alone and dazed in the flickering ambulance lights, haunted him. Could he trust him? The question gnawed at Hyunjin's mind, growing sharper with each passing minute. What if he tells someone? What if he already has? Each question spiraled into the next, a relentless cycle that only fed his anxiety.
He ran a hand through his hair as the bell rang, signaling the start of class. His heart jumped at the sound, his pulse quickening as the door creaked open and students began filing in. He forced his expression into something resembling calm, though his fingers still drummed nervously on the edge of his desk. His eyes tracked each student as they entered, scanning their faces, waiting for the boy to appear.
Finally, he saw him—the familiar face, now scrubbed clean, with glasses perched neatly on his nose. The boy walked into the room with an air of quiet confidence, his demeanor cool and composed. Hyunjin's nerves surged as he straightened in his seat, ready to catch the boy's eye, to exchange some word or signal. But the boy didn't even glance his way. He walked straight to his seat at the front of the class, set down his bag, and began organizing his notes as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
Hyunjin blinked, momentarily stunned. Did he... forget? No, that was impossible. He had to remember. But if he did, why wasn't he acknowledging it? Hyunjin slumped back in his chair, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. His mind raced, trying to make sense of the boy's indifference, each scenario playing out in his mind more unnerving than the last.
He leaned over to Jisung, who was already doodling absentmindedly in his notebook. "Who's that guy at the front? The one with the glasses?" Hyunjin whispered, trying to keep the edge of anxiety out of his voice.
Jisung barely looked up, offering only a half-hearted shrug. "No clue. I just know him as the guy who looks like he has his life together."
Hyunjin sighed, frustration tightening in his chest. Before he could probe further, Felix leaned over from the other side, having overheard their exchange. "That's Seungmin. Kim Seungmin," he said, rolling his eyes at Hyunjin. "You're such a dumbass, Hyunjin. He's literally part of the school council."
Hyunjin hummed in reply, the name finally registering in his mind. He never paid attention to the faces in his class, let alone their names. But now, all he could do was stare at Seungmin, his mind buzzing with questions. Why was he being ignored? Could it be that Seungmin was just as confused and scared as he was?
The rest of the lesson passed in a blur, the teacher's voice fading into background noise. The classroom seemed to close in on him, the ticking of the clock becoming an unbearable cadence that matched the pounding of his heart. Each second felt like a lifetime, the knot of anxiety in his chest tightening with every tick.
Finally, the bell rang, shattering his haze. Students began packing up, the rustle of papers and murmur of conversation filling the room. Hyunjin's eyes stayed fixed on Seungmin as he gathered his belongings with meticulous precision, his movements calm and unhurried.
Hyunjin hastily shoved his things into his bag, swallowing the lump in his throat as he stood up. He made his way to the front of the classroom, his steps quickening as he called out, "Seungmin!" His voice was louder than he intended, tinged with urgency.
But Seungmin didn't stop. He didn't even turn around. He walked straight through the doorway, his pace steady and unbothered, disappearing down the hallway without a backward glance.
Hyunjin froze, staring after him in disbelief. The frustration bubbled up inside him, threatening to spill over. He had saved his life, risked everything, and now he was being ignored like it meant nothing.
What are you playing at, Kim Seungmin?
The question echoed in his mind, louder than the chorus of doubts that had plagued him all morning. But beneath the frustration lay a deeper fear—the fear of what Seungmin could do with the truth he now held.
And that fear was enough to make Hyunjin's blood run cold.
