Hyunjin's footsteps were heavy, the cool evening air brushing against his skin as he and Seungmin walked home together. The streetlights flickered on, casting long shadows over the pavement as the sky faded into a deep purple, tinged with the remnants of the setting sun. Seungmin's voice filled the quiet, enthusiastically chatting about DAY6's upcoming album, his eyes sparkling as he rambled on. Normally, Hyunjin would be glued to every word, loving the way Seungmin's entire face lit up whenever he talked about his favorite band. But tonight, Hyunjin's mind was miles away, lost in the swirl of emotions that had been plaguing him since the night before. He barely registered Seungmin's words, offering the occasional "yeah" or "uh-huh" to seem engaged.
The wind picked up, rustling the leaves on the trees that lined the quiet street, the crispness of autumn making everything feel sharper, more vivid. Hyunjin could hear the faint hum of traffic in the distance, but out here, it was mostly just the sound of their shoes scuffing against the ground and the occasional breeze cutting through the silence.
Seungmin slowed his pace slightly, his voice softening as he spoke Hyunjin's name. "Hyunjin."
Hyunjin blinked, pulling himself from his thoughts and turning to face Seungmin, his brows knitting slightly. "Yeah?"
Seungmin hesitated, his gaze flickering to the ground before locking back on Hyunjin's. "You remember that one time I asked to see your powers... like properly?"
Hyunjin's throat tightened. He did remember—He had promised but never followed through. He hadn't shown anyone his powers before, at least not intentionally, not in the way Seungmin was asking. His powers were personal, something he had always kept locked away, afraid of what might happen if anyone truly saw what he was capable of.
Seungmin's voice broke through his thoughts again, quieter now. "Well, um, can I? Like... now?"
Hyunjin's heart stuttered in his chest. His pulse quickened, and for a second, he felt like he couldn't breathe. Showing Seungmin his powers—especially like this—felt so vulnerable, so exposed. But then he looked at Seungmin, at the soft but hopeful expression on his face, and something inside him loosened. This was Seungmin. The one person who knew more about him than anyone else ever had, who he trusted more than anyone. If he couldn't share this part of himself with Seungmin, then who could he share it with?
"I... uh... I mean, yeah... yeah. You can," Hyunjin finally replied, his voice cracking slightly. He swallowed hard, trying to calm the nerves buzzing under his skin.
Seungmin's face lit up with a smile, warm and genuine, and Hyunjin felt a tug in his chest. That smile—he could never say no to that smile.
Taking a breath, Hyunjin gestured in the other direction, leading Seungmin off the main road and down a narrow, dimly lit path that cut through the neighborhood. The air felt colder here, the shadows deeper, but it was quieter. More secluded. The perfect place to show someone something extraordinary without the risk of being seen.
