It was a late, stormy night. The rain poured relentlessly outside, its rhythmic patter against the windows filling the silence of the house. Everyone in the family was asleep except for Aarushi. She sat alone in their dimly lit bedroom, her eyes frequently darting to the clock. Mahir had still not returned from the office, and worry gnawed at her insides like a persistent ache.
Aarushi( thinking):- Mai hi ek baar bahar dekhkar aati hu.
(I'll just go and check outside.)
She decided to check outside, hoping to catch sight of him. But just as she was about to step out of the room, the door creaked open, and Mahir entered. He was soaked to the bone, rainwater dripping from his hair onto the floor, his clothes clinging to his shivering frame. The cold had clearly seeped into his bones.
Aarushi's heart clenched at the sight, but she remained silent. Without a word, she walked over to a drawer and pulled out a towel. She handed it to him, their fingers brushing for the briefest moment. Mahir took the towel with a slight nod and headed to the washroom, leaving wet footprints in his wake.
Aarushi, her expression unreadable, went to the kitchen. The warmth of the stove contrasted with the chill of the rain as she prepared a glass of hot milk. The steam from the milk swirled upward, its warmth offering a small comfort amid the tension. When she returned to the bedroom, Mahir was still in the washroom. She placed the glass on the bedside table and waited, the seconds dragging on like hours.
As she turned to leave, Mahir's voice broke the silence, low and filled with regret.
Mahir:- Aarushi.
She paused but didn't turn around.
Mahir:- Mai janu hu ki maine jo kuch bhi thaare saath kiya bahut galat kiya par.... tu kab tak aise mujhse baat na karegi?maari se baat karle. mujhse thaari ye chuppi bardash koni ho rahi.
( I know that whatever I did to you was very wrong, but... how long will you keep not talking to me like this? Please talk to me. I can't bear your silence anymore.)
His voice wavered, heavy with the weight of his guilt. Aarushi stood still, her back to him, the words sinking into the space between them.
Mahir:-Tu jo bolegi mai karne ko taiyaar hu ,par tu ek baar maare se baat karle.
( I'm ready to do whatever you say, but please just talk to me once.)
The plea in his voice was undeniable. Slowly, Aarushi turned and sat beside him, her movements measured and deliberate. She faced him, her eyes reflecting a deep sadness.
Aarushi:-Kya sunu Mahir ji mai?yahi ki mai aapki dusri patni hu?yahi ki mera aap par koi hak nahi hai?yahi ki maine sirf itna chaha tha ki mera pati kam se kam mujhpar bharosa karega?ya ye ki kaise aapke gharwalo ne jabardasti meri shaadi aapse karwai?kya sunu mai,Mahir ji ?aap hi bataiye na?
( What should I listen to, Mahir ji? That I am your second wife? That I have no right over you? That all I wanted was for my husband to at least trust me? Or that your family forced me into this marriage with you? What should I listen to, Mahir ji? You tell me.)
Her voice was soft but laced with a pain that had festered for too long. The words hung in the air, raw and unfiltered. Mahir looked down at the floor, unable to meet her eyes, the reality of her hurt settling like a heavy stone in his chest.
Mahir( thinking):-
Meri khataon ka bojh itna tha, ke tere dil se rishta tut gaya,
Mere apnon ke faislon se, tera bharosa mujhse chhut gaya.
Har raat bas yahi sochta hu, kaise tujhe wapas paun,
Tere bina yeh zindagi hai, par zinda lagti nahi.
