"My story isn't that bad, right? Or is it?"Ten days had passed, and Aarushi remained distant, keeping a painful secret buried within her heart. She knew her family would never be the same once they learned the truth: she was in the final stages of cancer, with only a slim chance of survival. The doctor had urged her to inform her loved ones and start treatment, yet Aarushi's heart weighed heavily, torn between hope and the fear of breaking their spirits.
As she sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her dupatta, her gaze fell blankly on the floor.
Aarushi (thinking):- Mai mahir ji ko batau ya na batau,Nahi mai nahi bata sakti kyuki treatment ke baad bhi sirf 5% chance hai mere Zinda rehne ke......
(Should I tell Mahir ji or not? No, I can’t tell him because even with treatment, there’s only a 5% chance that I’ll survive…)
The thought stirred a hollow ache in her chest, and a single tear rolled down her cheek, catching the dim light in her quiet room. Aarushi swiped at it quickly, trying to steady herself.
Aarushi (thinking):- Mere jaane ke baad kuku aur Kiki ka kya hoga?Kya karu mai?.......is sab ki wajah se mujhe sab se dur rehna pad raha hai.......kyuki agar Mahir ji ya baccho ko pata chal gaya.........toh wo kaise sambhal lenge apne aap ko.......Nahi mai unhe tutte hue nahi dekh sakti.......Mai unse dur rahu....unhi mai unki bhalai hai.
(What will happen to Kuku and Kiki after I'm gone? What should I do? … Because of all this, I have to stay away from everyone… because if Mahir ji or the kids find out… how will they cope? No, I can’t watch them break down… It’s better if I keep my distance… that’s what’s best for them.)
Lost in thought, Aarushi wiped her face and straightened herself just as Kiana opened the door, her small face shadowed by worry.
Kiana(sad):- Maasa.
Aarushi's heart yearned to pull her daughter close, to kiss her, to run her fingers through her soft hair. But she hardened herself, keeping her hands occupied with the shawl draped on her lap.
Kiana:- Maasa ........ Aaj school mai parents teacher meeting tha..
(Maasa… today was the parent-teacher meeting at school…)
Controlling her tears,Kiana said,
Kiana:- Aap....aap kyu nahi aaye.
(Why… why didn’t you come?)
Kiana's voice was small, choked with the tears she was trying to hide. The words hit Aarushi like a blow, reminding her of everything she had once been fully present for. Her heart twisted with guilt.
Aarushi(covering her worry):- Maine aapse us din bhi bola tha Kiana.....mai nahi aa paungi...aap apne babasa ko lekar jana.
(I told you, Kiana… I couldn’t come… you should have taken your father instead.)
Kiana's eyes filled with tears. She fidgeted, biting her lip.
Kiana(with tears):- Par Maasa.....Kuch hua hai kya?Aap gussa ho mujhse?Aap kuku se gussa ho?Maasa please gussa mat ho.....mai kuku ko bhi bol dungi...aapko pareshan nahi karega wo...
(But, Mom… is something wrong? Are you angry with me? Are you angry with Kuku? Mom, please don’t be mad… I’ll tell Kuku not to bother you anymore…)
Slowly, Kiana wrapped her arms around Aarushi's legs, pressing her face into her mother's lap, her little shoulders trembling.
Kiana:- Sorry Maasa.
Aarushi's hand hovered over Kiana's head, her fingers aching to soothe her daughter. But she withdrew, steeling herself.
Aarushi:- Mujhe chodo,Kiana.mujhe abhi kaam hai.
