Yuma was just walking through the city of Tokyo one hot Saturday afternoon when he came across a new café. The name was in Russian and it read: "Tokiyskoye meyd-kafe". He did not understand and decided to enter. When he went inside and saw something he was not expecting. Hanna, his white haired half-Japanese and half-Russian girlfriend with blue eyes was working at the café, dressed in a maid outfit. It was at this moment when the two first year high school students made eye contact.
"Hanna?" Yuma asked
"Gah, Yuma!" Hanna bellowed
"Hi." Yuma said
"What're you doing here?" Hanna asked
"I was just checking this place out, I didn't know you worked at a maid café." Yuma said
"It's only a part-time job, please don't tell anyone." Hanna said
As they stood there, frozen in surprise, the sounds of the café's background music and gentle chatter of the patrons seemed to fade away. Yuma's eyes were fixed on Hanna's maid outfit, a bright pink and white getup with a fluffy apron and a matching ribbon in her hair. He couldn't believe that his girlfriend, the same girl who would often tease him about his love for anime and manga, was now standing in front of him, dressed in a costume straight out of his favorite shows.
Hanna, on the other hand, looked mortified. Her cheeks were flushed, and her blue eyes darted around the café, as if she was worried that someone would overhear their conversation. "Please, Yuma, don't make a scene," she whispered, her voice laced with a hint of desperation.
Yuma, still in shock, nodded slowly. "I won't, I won't," he promised, trying to process what he was seeing. He glanced around the café, taking in the Russian-inspired decorations and the few patrons who were sipping on coffee and tea. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with soft music playing in the background.
Hanna, seeming to sense his gaze, nodded discreetly towards the counter. "I'll get you a drink, okay?" she said, her voice still hushed. "Just... just sit down and I'll bring it over."
Yuma nodded, still feeling like he was in a dream. He made his way to a small table by the window, his eyes fixed on Hanna as she expertly juggled multiple orders and conversations with the patrons. She was always a hard worker, but he had no idea she was capable of multitasking like this.
As he sat down, he couldn't help but wonder why Hanna had kept this job a secret from him. They had been dating for almost a year, and he thought they shared everything with each other. But now, he was starting to realize that there were still parts of her life that she kept hidden from him.
Hanna appeared at his table, carrying a steaming cup of coffee and a plate of Russian pastries. "So, what brings you here today?" she asked, her tone light and casual, but her eyes still sparkling with a hint of nervousness.
Yuma took a sip of the coffee, feeling the rich flavours explode in his mouth. "Just exploring the city," he said, trying to sound nonchalant. "I saw the sign and thought it looked interesting."
Hanna nodded, her eyes never leaving his face. "Yeah, it's a pretty unique place," she said. "The owner, Natalia, she's from Russia, and she wanted to bring a piece of her culture to Tokyo."
As they chatted, Yuma noticed that the patrons were starting to stare at them. He realized that Hanna's maid outfit, combined with their conversation, was drawing attention to them. He glanced around the café, feeling a pang of embarrassment.
"Hanna, maybe we should... um... talk about this outside?" he suggested, trying to spare her the embarrassment.
Hanna's face fell, and for a moment, Yuma thought he saw a flash of disappointment in her eyes. But then, she nodded, her expression smoothing out. "Yeah, sure," she said. "I'll just... uh... take a short break."
