The bustling energy in the small town hadn't diminished the morning of the fiesta. The "Palaro ng Bayan" (Games of the People) was set to take place, a lively event where children and adults participated in various traditional Filipino games, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.
Yanna's grandparents were enthusiastic about the event, and it didn't take long before Fox and Yanna were encouraged to join in.
Yanna: "Are you ready to embarrass yourself, city boy?" she teased, nudging Fox with a playful grin.
Fox: "Embarrass myself? I think you're underestimating my competitive side." He winked, fully embracing the idea of joining the local games.
The Event Begins
The town square was already buzzing with excitement as families gathered around makeshift game stations. Kids chased each other in circles while adults chatted, eager to take part in the events. A large banner hung between two coconut trees that read "Palaro ng Bayan: Sama-sama sa Kasiyahan!" (Games of the People: Together in Fun!).
The palaro kicked off with a line-up of traditional games that brought nostalgia to Yanna and anticipation to Fox, who was ready to experience the spirit of the countryside.
Game 1: "Patintero"
The first game announced was Patintero, a popular Filipino game where players had to pass through opposing lines without getting tagged. Yanna, full of excitement, convinced Fox to join her team, and together they faced a group of locals who clearly had years of experience.
Fox: "What's the strategy?" he asked as they stood ready.
Yanna smirked. "Just don't get caught!"
As the whistle blew, Fox sprinted forward, his tall frame moving swiftly. He narrowly avoided the swift hands of the opponents, laughter escaping his lips as he dodged a near-tag. Yanna was quick on her feet as well, sneaking past the opponents like she had played this all her life. Together, they managed to score points for their team, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Fox: "This is tougher than it looks!"
Yanna laughed, breathless. "Told you! But you're doing great!"
Game 2: "Palo Sebo"
Next up was the Palo Sebo, a more challenging game that involved climbing a greased bamboo pole to grab a flag at the top. Fox eyed the tall bamboo pole, its slick surface shining in the sun.
Fox: "You've got to be kidding me. People actually climb this?"
Yanna giggled. "Yes! And it's a lot harder than it looks. Think you're up for it?"
Not one to back down from a challenge, Fox rolled up his sleeves and gave it a try. The crowd cheered as he began the climb, but he barely made it halfway before sliding back down, his arms and legs covered in grease. Yanna and the townspeople erupted in laughter, and even Fox couldn't help but chuckle at his own failure.
Fox: "Okay, I'll admit, I'm defeated by the pole."
Yanna: "It's okay! At least you tried!"
Game 3: "Tumbang Preso"
Next was Tumbang Preso, where participants threw slippers at a can to knock it over. Fox found himself taking this game a bit more seriously, determined to prove his worth after the Palo Sebo incident.
Fox: "Watch this."
With a precise throw, Fox knocked the can over on his first try, drawing cheers from the kids who had gathered to watch. Yanna clapped, impressed by his accuracy.
