❤︎ Nico really needed to learn how to say no to Helena.

What was it about her that made it so difficult and borderline impossible to say no? He was convinced it was some hidden power because there was no way he was willingly training with her.

That's not to say he didn't train, but Helena took training to another level. Ethan had only just started to keep up with her, and from Nico's keen observation skills, Percy couldn't keep up with her if he didn't dump a bottle of water on his head every five minutes.

"Your guard is too low, Neeks," Helena said. "If I were the enemy, I would have killed you three times over."

"If you were the enemy," Nico doubles over, trying to catch his breath. "I would have nicked you with my sword, and you would have been done."

Helena opens her mouth to protest, frowns, and then nods slowly, agreeing with him.

"Shouldn't Ethan be back by now?"

"How would I know?" 

"Because you shadow travel daily?"

As if summoned, Ethan emerges from the shadowy corner of the gym, grinning.

"I did it!"

"What?" Nico asks.

Ethan gives him a look. "You know what!"

"I don't know what, but I do know who?"

"Who?"

"Yeah."

Ethan looks at him confused. "Who are you even talking about?"

"Who."

"Nik," Helena calls out. "Stop confusing Eddy with quotes from movies he hasn't watched yet."

"But it's fun," Nico pouts. "He looks stupid when he's confused."

"You wanna go?" Ethan said.

"I don't fight with kids that literally learnt how to shadow travel three seconds ago."

Helena sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose, and shakes her head.

Kids these days.

Ethan stares at the weapon in his hand.

"You-you're just giving this to me?"

"As I said three times," Helena groans. "Yes."

"But you are just giving this to me?"

Ethan held Ruby in front of Helena's eyes, making sure she saw what she had just given him.

"I literally cannot be any clearer, Eddy. I am giving Ruby, my weapon, to you because you do not have one, and I want to give it to you."

Ethan stares at her. "But what about your dad?"

She snorts. "Don't even worry about him. If he has a problem, he can tell me himself. Also, you're practically his adopted son; he won't say shit. Also, he loves me and literally lets me do whatever I want, so you're good."

Nico coughs, trying to cover up his laugh as he watches their interaction. 

"Stupid."

Ethan glared at him, and Nico stuck out his tongue in retaliation.

"I would give you something, Nikky," Helena smiles, turning to him. "But you already have a cool as fuck sword."

Nico smiles back at her. "Now we all have cool swords. We are going to kill so many people and be untouchable!"

Helena grins, ruffling his hair. 

"That's the spirit, kiddo."

"I can't believe you're encouraging murder," Ethan said. 

"I'm literally the daughter of war and bloodlust personified." Helena rolls her eyes. "What else did you expect? You better kill bitches too."

Nico snorts in amusement.

"It's literally kill or be killed, and we have to be ready for that mission Clare wants us to go on."

"Oh, her. Why do I like her again?" Ethan questions.

"She's my sister?"

"Ah, that'll do it."

She smacks the back of his head. "Okay, both of you come at me. Let's polish up your sword moves."

Helena spends the better part of the afternoon teaching Ethan and Nico new moves and stances as well as blocking their onslaught of attacks. 

Her goal had been to help Ethan and Nico perfect the way they handle weapons and attacks but it ended up being helpful to her as well. Now that she had officially given Ruby to Ethan (it had always been her plan), she needed to summon weapons at a faster rate.

Fighting against Ethan, who already knew what he was doing and Nico, who was a quick learner, had her summoning weapons to counter their attacks faster than she had before. She kept a mental tally of how many weapons she could summon before her power and body started feeling its effects. 

If her father was right and if the Olympians couldn't defeat Typhon, war was approaching very soon and very fast. 

Helena needed to be ready. She couldn't be caught lacking; what kind of daughter of Ares would she be? And more importantly, if she was slow or lacking if she hesitated for even a second, she wouldn't be able to protect those important to her. The other camper, the younger kids, her friends, and her family.

No. 

By the time war was upon them, Helena Colette would be ready for it.

And may the gods have mercy on whatever poor soul found themselves at the other end of her blade.
